Not a fan of this firing at all.

In hindsight, the Kessel trade was about the only poor trade he made and yet no one could've predicted that. He still got a tremendously rare sniper so they did okay.

He's acquired a ton via trade and gave up very little. On top of that, Burke is great for the Toronto media and was very professional.

The timing seems very weird.

One thing I especially don't like is that with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry potentially slated to become free agents, Burke could've been the man to bring these two to leaf land....I would've at least liked to see him try.

I hope Dave Nonis takes over.

This firing is a terrible move. The guy inherits a team that's a complete dumpster fire, does a good job in steering the ship around by acquiring nice young pieces, lands one of the best young goal scoring wingers in the league, lands at worst a #2 d man in phaneuf and still gets fired after what, 4years!?! The only reason I'd be willing to accept for this move is if he punched Ed Rogers baby in the face.

The Leafs are a Mickey Mouse operation. Thankfully the Jays and Raptors have a bit more patience with their GM's. They will be rewarded.

Unless something comes out big time, the Leafs just made a huge mistake.
Only way to cover themselves is by hiring a GM at least as competent.
ie Holland, Poile etc.

Knowing the Leafs though, I am afraid this might signal the return of Ferguson Junior.

Makes it almost feel like steping in front of a train to us Leaf fans.

Take a step back and look at results instead of individual trades/deals etc.

The team has actually done worse during his time, than it did while Ferguson was GM (I think?). And yet people think he's done a great job?

Maybe it really is as simple as 'You suck as a GM, goodbye!' but done at a strange time.

Well done sir!

I've heard many ramblings.. from him not wanting to take on Luongo's contract due to his stance on contract issues to it being CBA related.. I actually think Burke did a great job.. Kessel, Versteeg, Lupul, JVR, Kessel, Dion, Gardiner, and all the youngsters in the Marlies.. He's drafted well and he's a smart man.. I thought the leafs were getting close with Burke.. now he's gone.. I liked his straight forward attitude..

Keep in mind he also shipped out some crap.. Stajan, Hagman, Toskala, Jason Blake.. And was just on the tail of aquiring Luongo.. Maybe a good move or maybe not but you cant say he's done a poor job with what he had to offer..

The timing of this is very weird. I'm not a Toronto fan but I remember hearing something about Francois Allaire and Burke not getting along? I know he and Luongo have been working in the off season. Could the combination of not hiring Allaire and Luongo not being here be the reason?

Don't think I'd be very happy as a Leafs fan

As a Canucks fan several of Burkes moves were questioned when he was the GM here but looking back I can tell you Burke did wonders for the Canucks and made several moves that have made them a successful franchise

He drafted Kesler 23th overall
Somehow made several moves in the 99 draft to walk away with both Sedins while only losing McCabe as a roster player
Traded fan favourite Trevor Linden for Bertuzzi, McCabe, pick (Jarkko Ruutu)

And for the record.. I doubt keeping Seguin and Hamilton would have kept him his job.. He may have been fired sooner instead of making a push to win now instead of wait for prospects to gain form.. He knew Kessel was a good player.. Would Seguin be the same player he is today if he was drafted by the leafs instead of groomed by the Bruins? Or hamilton?? Will he be the defender everyone thinks?

I agree the trade may seem one sided now but back then he probably wanted to keep his job..
