What do you guys think of Murphy going forward? I wasn't too impressed with his play at the WJ's.
He's a lot like Ryan Ellis, struggles defensively but is a stud offensively from the back end. Ellis seemed to have a much better WJ's though when he played. Would you look to move him for another prospect...say Kuznetsov?

I wouldn't. I can't stand the guy. I agree with the Ryan Ellis comparison (though I like Ellis better) and I just can't decide if he makes it as an NHL'er. Great offensive skills but man can he look atrocious in his own end. I think he's a long term project, albeit with great reward if he makes it.

IMO he just had a bad WJC. He will still be a good fantasy defenesemen eventually. Murphy was the most NHL ready of his draft class D IMO he was never the guy with the highest upside. Columbus drafted him because he is ready now and doesn't need as much development and their development historically stinks.
If I could get Kuznetzov for Murphy I would do it in a heart beat |

If you can get legit value for the guy I'd cut bait. I do not see a player anywhere near ready for NHL action. There's little room in the NHL for small offensive defencemen who are highly suspect defensively. His OHL production is a bit of an enigma (possibly injury related) but I hate to see a players point-per-game production drop in three consecutive junior campaigns (although he did light it up in the playoffs last year).
Give him 2-3 years in the AHL and we'll know if he can really hack it with the big boys...until then I'm calling him a long term project with decent to good upside. Look at it this way, Ryan Ellis was drafted two years before Murphy, is a better player and has still only played 32 NHL games. |

Murphy's defense is fairly solid at the OHL level, but obviously he still has a lot of work to do as the opposing talent gets better. He's a good player to hold if you can afford to, as he definitely has the talent to be a big scorer on defense but if you need the spot or you can get a good return on him by all means shuttle him off. Enticing upside but pretty longshot of actually hitting it or even making the NHL in a substantial way.
If you can swap him for Kuznetsov, I'd probably do it.
