Default The 2 buyouts for every team starting this offseason

I'm curious as to who will be bought out. There are some very likely people, but I have a question.

Can a team buyout a player and then resign them at a cheaper cap or is that just a terrible business decision? I'm not all that familiar with buyouts and how they work other than the cap issue they usually have.

For example,

I would imagine a guy like Vinny Lecavalier would be a potential buyout guy. I don't see the team wanting to be rid of him, but can they buy him out and renegotiate his contract?

What is the deal with this? Who do you want bought out?

I thought this was a legitimate possibility. How advantageous would it be for an incredibly wealthy market like New York to tell Nash that they'd buy out his contract only to sign him to one with a lower cap. Nash makes more money from his buyout+new contract, New York would get a lower caphit.

Good thing this rule is around, didn't know it.

Good to know. So is a guy like Vinny going to be bought out then? He's not living up to the contract, but I think his leadership is sorely needed there. Though I like the idea of St. Louis getting the C until Stamkos is ready for it.

I like thinking about who could get bought out and who will sign them.

Suter? I think it's ridiculous, but it's a possibility now.

To me the most likely ones are Gomez and Redden. I would say Dipietro but does Charles Wang want to admit it was a mistake and they might actually want his cap hit to keep them above the floor.

I think there will also be a bunch of little buyouts of guys you didn't think about but will make sense when you see it. Guys like Jeff Schultz or Cory Sarich.

I doubt there will be any huge contract bought out by guys you can still player (Vinny, Kovalchuk, Hossa, etc.) NHL GMs don't think long term so even though it might be a good idea to take care of that in the long term, I don't think they will do it because of the short term it is debatable.

As a Leaf fan I wish that the Leafs would use their buckets of money to turn this to their advantage. Leave Mike Komisarek alone. Instead offer the Islanders to take Dipetro and buy him out ($24 million). The service will only cost Nino Niederreiter and Griffin Reinhart. Then go to Tampa and do the same things for Vinny ($30 million). Get Brett Connolly and Andrey Vasilevskiy. It is like skipping two years of rebuilding. The Leafs can recover this money in one playoff run (or simply raise ticket prices) but that is a lot of money for owners losing millions every year.

I know, I know, it is all crazy talk.... but a guy can dream.
