The fact that she has gotten such a highly regarded standing is proof of one thing only and that's that greed rules. Objectivism and her novels are the epitome of selfishness. She calls selfishness a virtue and altruism the worst thing in the world. She was a sociopath, bitter from having her family's riches taken by communists, and most of the people who spend their lives figuring out ways to steal other people's money on Wall Street are also sociopaths.

The fact that her lover (Greenspan) became probably the single most powerful man in banking just goes to show what greed makes some people do.

Obama was asked about it simply because his opponent's VP candidate still hasn't gotten over the usual Ayn Rand hard-on some guys get when their ignorant boobs who don't understand how the world works. Yeah, let's privatize everything. That'll work well...

It still doesn't address my question: How the **** do all those people overlook her extremely bad prose? And I'm talking about the people who read Atlas Shrugged without it being course literature.
lol...I was waiting for you to take that ball and run with it. Thank you.

I spent the summer of 2010 learning to thoroughly HATE that bitch after a very good friend of mine got stuck in the swamp that is objectivism. There is not one single positive thing about that woman. She's dishonest, she's a sociopath, she's a bad writer and her cult's acolytes are effectively responsible for the current economic depression we're in. Selfishness is a virtue, my ass...

I agree with you on your take of Rand. I think your right on point. But having read a lot of philosophy, the skill of the writers vary but what your trying to get out of the text is the content. I couldn't find myself reading the book if it was purely for entertainment or its prose as you point out.

So I think those that do, are looking at the content, and those who have read it for the prose, have poor taste in literature ha.

No no, sorry if that's what you thought. I was referring to the original question about why you would read it, even thought it was shitty writing. And my answer was that it would allow you to discuss it. Not referring to whether you read it or not.

** probably a good call, her choice in books would scare me off too! Ha.

The Fellowship of the Ring - about 50 pages left, first time reading it, love it.

The Hobbit - Read it so I could have it done before the movie. Liked it.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Saw the movie first so I thought I would read the book. She is hotter in the movie...lol

1984 - Never read any Orwell before. I definitely loved this book.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Yea, I wrote it here. lol I read books 3-7 back after the first two movies came out. never read the first two, so I thought I fit them in from time to tim. I liked the series for what it is.

Books on Deck - The Impressionists, Books 2/3 Dragon Tattoo, Two Towers/Return of the King, The Magician King

I hear ya. I often read books on subject matters that I don't agree with or author's opining in contradiction to my own beliefs. Ya need to know the counter-argument before you can criticize it - which is what Dakkster is getting at.

I am amazed when people - seeing you hold a book - are so quick to assume you share the viewpoint. "Oh I can't believe you're reading that"....I get that a lot.

My last five books were:
The Conservative Soul: Fundamentalism, Freedom, and the Future of the Right by Andrew Sullivan (Oct 9, 2007)

Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America by John Avlon and Tina Brown (Feb 23, 2010)

God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens (Apr 6, 2009) - note: didn't really like this book, despite the author being one of my fav thinkers of the world. The book mirrored an angry rant more than a cogent argument.

God Is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World--and Why Their Differences Matter by Stephen Prothero-HarperOne- (Jun 1, 2010) - I agreed with the overall premise, but it came across as somewhat naive to me (ie why can't we all just get along)

Thomas Jefferson : Writings : Autobiography / Notes on the State of Virginia / Public and Private Papers / Addresses / Letters (Library of America) by Thomas Jefferson (Aug 15, 1984) - I am a deist. Who knew?

My next three are:
Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy by Bruce R. Bartlett (Feb 21, 2006)

The New American Economy: The Failure of Reaganomics and a New Way Forward by Bruce R. Bartlett (Oct 13, 2009)

Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party's Buried Past by Bruce R. Bartlett (Jan 8, 2008)

orwell fan. you might enjoy Homage to Catalonia, his account of time spent fighting with the poum in the spanish civil war. he ended up on the communist party death list, and barely escaped spain. several of his friends and fellow soldiers fighting the fascists were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered by the communists.

here is a link to orwell's essay on style. the man hated authoritarians in all forms. https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/orwell46.htm

Hitchen's Arguably, a collection of essays, turned me in the direction of Mantel and Wolf Hall. he was uncharacteristically enthusiastic. i see why.
