Just curious, which one? He was barely in the first one and the mask didn't appear until the end of the second or beginning of the third (I think).

Yeah, living on Long Island...that was a tough summer. I wouldn't go into the ocean passed my knees. I'd freak when something brushed up against me. To this day I won't skinny dip at night

The Descent
The Ring
Event Horizon

That's my top three, with honorable mentions to Jaws, Paranormal Activity and The Thing. Stephen King's It has a special place in my heart too, but it hasn't aged well

The first one... the spitting image of his disgusting face is still seared into my skull to this day. I think the fact that you know he's lurking around but you don't see him much makes it even scarier.

The very end of Friday the 13th....calm...serene....lake...oh look a canoe...

They had to pry me from the ceiling, in order to clean my knickers.

descent it really good. i never thought of myself as claustraphobic, but I sure felt it during the early scenes of this movie. the movie created a mood and relied less on shock value to orchestrate its chills... that same erie, trapped, feeling as in alien, many years ago...

the british version is the better version, as it doesn't dumb itself down at the end for the american audience and their need for a happy ending...

Ones that haven't been named yet:
The Strangers
High Tension
The Birds. Alfred Hitchcock definitely made me afraid of birds for a while when I was young. Anytime I was by a bird I'd flip out once they started flying.

Honorable Mentions:
The Orphanage
The Jacket

There's a few Japanese and Korean movies too that really shine. Sign of good horror films are when they can put the fear in you even during daylight...can't remember the names though

Not necessarily scary, but I love Evil dead II and Dead Alive (by Peter Jackson). Both funny and imaginative movies.

In a different register, I love Polanski's The Tenant and Rosemary's Baby.

Yeah, I saw the European version. That's what hit me so hard about that movie, it was SO hopeless for the characters! It has both jump scares AND that creeping feeling of dread.
