Default Slim pickings on the waiver wire

20 team Yahoo H2H partial keeper (keep 24)
Start: 4 C, 4 LW, 4 RW, 6 D, 2 G, 10 BN (no farm)
Stats: G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG, FW, HIT, BLK / GS, W, GAA, SV%, SHO

C: Backstrom, Hanzal, Mueller, Fiddler (LW), Schwartz, Grigorenko
LW: Brown (RW), Landeskog, Dubinsky (C), Cooke, Paajarvi, Shelley
RW: Voracek, Johansen (C), Z. Kassian, Atkinson, Asham, Coyle (C)
D: Phaneuf, Green, Ekman-Larsson, Carlson, J. Schultz, Orpik, Polak, Fistric
G: Rinne, Luongo, Neuvirth, Lack

Thinking of dropping Shelley for the best available offensive option at C or LW.

Available players include:

C: Stajan, Lombardi, Vincour, Loktionov, Hartikainen, Colborne, Spooner, Knight
LW: Bowman, Horak, Tedenby, Zucker

I'm thinking Stajan because he will contribute decent FWs and should see some PP2 time. I already have a lot of youth on my bench that may or may not help contribute this year. Do you think any of the available guys I listed can contribute immediately?

I would probably take a flyer on Horak or Tenendby just because they have a bit more upside than Stajan does. Either way whoever you pick up will be better than Shelley

On that list I like:

Vincour
Bowman
Tedenby

All right now are basically 3rd line guys who have some offensive upside. Tedenby could easily slide into a top 6 role given the right opportunity.

In a 20 team league, not surprised at the slim pickings....

I think it comes down to the team a player is on and your league cats

Frozen Pool shows Lombardi (TOR), Stajan (CGY) and Bowman (CAR) score the highest in comparison with the rest of the group, in that order. Lombardi played 62 G, Stajan 61 and Bowman 37

Bowman was +2, Stajan -3 and Lombardi -19(!) last season

Stajan & Lombardi had the highest G and A totals (both 8 and 10 respectively)

None have impactful PP time, Bowman had highest with :53 per game, but with Staal and Semin joining CAR I doubt he'll get a sniff this season. Stajan had 2 PPP, Lombardi 0

Lombardi is only one with impactful SH time, 2 SHP with no one else registering anything

Stajan has the edge in FW, doubling the next one in Lombardi, and PIM (29 to 10 for Lombardi; Horak had 16 and Tedenby had 14)

Lombardi had 25 more SOG last season then the next best one, Stajan, and had more BLKS (34 to 33 for Stajan) and HITS (58 to 49 for Stajan)

So Lombardi wins in 4 cats (BLKS, HITS, SOG, SHP), Stajan in 4 cats (PIM, PPP, FW, +/-), they tied in 2 cats (G, A) and GWG are neglible for any of these guys...

So, will TOR be a better team than CGY? Can Lombardi reverse that nasty -19? Could Stajan get more of an opportunity with CGY?

The safe choice seems to be Stajan, but give Lombardi another look before you do and keep in mind Bowman ranked 3rd amongst this group despite playing half as many games...keep him as your darkhorse choice

I'd drop Shelley for sure, and pickup Loktionov, who will be worth waiting on. Loktionov's agent said when the lockout is over they'll be asking for a trade, so its likely his role increases as I don't think hes been getting a fair deal in LA. Looks like he'll be spending the lockout in the AHL, so thats another plus at this point.

It be really tough for me to keep role players like Fiddler/Asham/Cooke over legit prospects like Spooner, Zucker and guys like Tedenby(if he can't crack the Devils roster now, then....)

I wish I could +Rep for Front's post. There's some really solid advice in there, and he's got the Zappa avatar to boot.

I'd also echo the sentiments of hockeyHitman; there's gotta be a point of diminishing returns v. Future returns when it comes to keeping players in your format. I would much rather keep promising prospects with legit top-6 upside (Loktionov, Tedenby) instead of role players like Stajan, Lombardi etc.

Seems like you need to assess your team / league and come to a decision on where you stand on this prospect vs. depth guy dilemma. I, for one, would choose prospects. Upside, upside, upside.

I'm going after the swing for the fences pick...

Shelley wasn't going to contribute much to your team anyways so losing him isn't going to be a big deal.

If you want the safe option you go after Lombardi or Stajan, but to me you already have pretty good depth at C anyways, and a couple of young kids in Grigs and Schwartz, so backups aren't too big of a deal for you.

If I were in your situation, I'd go after Bowman, there's a bit more upside there... and hes on the verge of cracking a full time NHL line up. He's already got 5 goals in 6 games with the Checkers, and should be in better form than the other two once the season starts. He'd be a great 3rd liner who can play on the 2nd PP unit.

You're not losing much with Shelley anyways, might as well make a swing for the fences pick.

Well we only keep 24, so my last keeper would probably be Cooke at this point. I don't want too many rooks taking up space on my bench if they aren't contributing something. I'd rather have a vet contributing now rather than another rook who contributes next year.

You've also got to consider trade value. I realize they're sitting on the wire so their value is minimal, but guys like Loktionov and Tedenby surely have better "market value" than guys like Stajan, Lombardi and even Bowman - though there is upside there.

Seems to me like you'd be able to get a much better return from a younger team by trading Tedenby+Loktionov or something. The net result would probably be better than anything else you're considering at the moment. Am I way off here?
