The trade I was offered in a keeper league (points only, protect any 10 plus 1 rookie, head 2 head, weekly setup without waiver pick ups - one time draft in January) has me thinking...
I don\'t like it but there is something about it that has me second guessing myself so I thought that I would throw it out there for you guys. I get: Bill Gurien SJ Joe Sakic COL Chris Pronger ANA He gets Ilya Kovalchuk ATL Matt Carle SJ I would be giving up a LOT of youth for old farts. Don\'t need the defense however could use Pronger when Dallas has a two game week. I don\'t see myself protecting Gurien or Sakic but might protect Pronger (then again I would want to protect Boyle, Pronger, Bouwmeester and Zubov). I see Kovalchuk as the best player on this team and getting those two players would not fill the hole for next year. Give me your thoughts. My team is as follows: Ilya Kovalchuk (ATL) Jarome Iginla (CGY) Henrik Zetterberg (DET) Martin Havlat (CHI) Alexander Semin (WAS) Nik Backstrom (WAS) Martin Straka (NYR) Jonathon Cheechoo (SJ) Brendan Shanahan (NYR) Mathew Lombardi (CGY) Nik Zherdev (CBJ) Joe Pavelski (SJ) Tuomo Ruutu (CHI) Dan Boyle (T.B.) Sergei Zubov (DAL) Matt Carle (SJ) Jay Bouwmeester (FLA) Phillipe Boucher (DAL) Ron Hainsey (CBJ) Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT) J.S. Gigure (ANA) Vesa Toskala (SJ) Post edited by: Stannic, at: 2007/03/01 20:05

Dude, I wouldn\'t make this trade unless you need the extra push to win the league this year. From a keeper standpoint it doesn\'t make sense at all.
Your team looks pretty jacked for next year without making the trade... I mean look at who your 11 keepers will probably be... my gosh!! Ilya Kovalchuk Jarome Iginla Henrik Zetterberg Alexander Semin Nik Backstrom Jonathon Cheechoo Dan Boyle Carle (as your rookie) Marc-Andre Fleury J.S. Gigure I wouldn\'t keep havlat since he\'s so injury prone, and he still has no one to play with in chicago... I wouldn\'t keep either of the dallas defenders, because I see their production fading away (along with dallas\'s wins) over the next few seasons. But yeah... unless you\'re pushing to win this year... don\'t make the trade.

I should probably also state that it is regular season only. I\'m currently sitting with a record of 42-21, 4 wins behind the leader (but leading my division by 6 games). The prize structure is a little different ($200 for division winner and $200 additional for the overall champ, plus numerous other prizes - I have currently accumulated $100 in prizes so far to date - which is the entry fee). I think I can win the division quite easily with the team as is, however the team behind me just picked up Redden and Briere for Phanuef and a 1st Round pick... ... ...

If you are gonna make a run at the title make the deal. Kovalchuk has slipped somewhat (if you call a point-per-game pace slipping) without a #1 center. You can keep Pronger (he is the best D of the bunch) as one of your D & use Backstrom as your rookie. Pronger still has several elite years left in the gas tank. Carle has a lot of upside but SJ has a lot of good young D (Ehrhoff & Vlasic) and I also could see them making a pitch for Souray in the summer(who wants to play in California). Guerin will play on one of the top two lines. That means Marleau or Thornton as his pivot, a big step up from STL.
Personally if you think you have a legitimate shot at the title take it. Overwise you end up like Muckler in Ottawa, always a bridesmaid never the bride (figuratively not literally). Just my opinion. Post edited by: WhatThePuck?, at: 2007/03/01 22:26

Yeah, if you\'re close enough to challenge for the title, take it. Sakic and Pronger will help you quite a bit, and Pronger will help your defense in the future...

Keep this in mind:
Guerin, Big Joe, and Pronger will all continue at their current production pace. Kovalchuk and Carle will improve. Carle because he HAS been improving of late, and Kovalchuk because he now has Tkachuk. So the guys you would be giving up I think are on the upswing - 10% to 20% more production than what you were seeing all season.

I concur with Dobber! Kovalchuk can only improve...and ATL HAS to improve their center situation in the off season...right?
Maybe you can slip Havlat in place of Kovalchuk? It might make the other team intrigued...you might need to throw in a pick...but nothing too great...a mid round pick maybe. I wouldn\'t make that deal if it were me...Kovalchuk is too young to give up now!

Heh! I have been weighing the merits of going after Kovalchuk straight-up with Ovechkin - guess I wouldn\'t be supporting this trade. You need to weigh the value of the drop you need to make to take the extra player and that may not be insignificant.

In addition to everyone else\'s thoughts, you no longer have to worry about 2 game weeks for Dallas...I actually think they have two 4-game weeks and the rest are 3 from here on out.
