Mostly, there aren't that many young up & rising NHL goalies with expiring contracts. Mike Smith is one of them. His contract expires with Phoenix after this year.
A lockout only means there is less NHL season to proven he is NOT the real deal.

Both Minnesota (Nik Backstrom on his last year of contract) and Toronto (???) will be opening up the purse-strings for Mr. Smith in the summer of 2013. I think he'll get a shot to sign with either. Smith's wife is a former olympic snow skiier so I see him heading back up North given the opportunity.

Mike Smith (TOR)
Mike Smith (MIN)

Nice ring to it... no?
I don't think being a pending FA is a good thing. I'd rather he stick with the situation where he's having success. I also think he'd fail in Toronto, and I don't think Minnesota is going to want to spend a lot on another goalie. Between Harding and Hackett they don't really need one, and with the money they're throwing around they could benefit by having two relatively cheap goalies on the roster. But yeah Minni is obviously a great place for a goalie.

I think that Toronto will get Luongo as soon that the lock out will end. And I feel that Min invest enough with Parise and Suter... so Hacket will fill the hole pretty soon... Smith will probably stay with Phoenix but what a gess !!!

Minnesota has $6m they are already paying Nik Backstrom.
They could use that same amount of money on Mike Smith (younger, improving). Minnesota is also a CAP team. They haven't been successful in the standings(yet), but it's a hockey hotbed that sells out most nights. They are going to be spending full cap for the foreseeable future, IMO.

Minnesota is a team that has the West in its sights. Most of the West is on the way down, IMO (Detroit, Vancouver, San Jose). That's why we've seen teams like Nashville & Phoenix finishing 4th/5th overall. That's why teams like Los Angeles can sneak into the playoffs as the 8th seed and storm through their opponents.

I think Minnesota can be a top 5 team in the West for the next 5 years... if they get a #1 goaltender. They are NOT going to be a top 3 team with Harding and/or Hackett, c'mon.
(PS. The West is going to be VAN,CHI,MIN,STL,EDM... those'll be the big teams for the next 5 years, book it.)

Minnesota is going to make a big pitch for Mike Smith next summer... just wait & see.

After his faltering in Tampa, I can't help but wonder if Smith is very aware of the impact his situation is having on his success and he re-signs, because he knows a good thing. Just food for thought.
