Default Mike Smith

I have an opportunity to acquire Mike Smith in my league. If you take a look at my team, you'll se I absolutly need a second goalie. The problem is that Smith is signed for 5 years in my league and not for cheap.

I think he'll make the job this year but what about the next ones... Do you think he worth the risk ???

What he said. Fits the system like a glove. Solid defenders in a solid defensive system with a few top notch D prospects coming up through the pipes.

Man, five years is a HUGE leap of faith. If he was attainable for a cheap cost both value wise and $ wise I'd definitely consider it but the last thing you want is to take that leap and he turns out to be a bust two years down the road.

I would look elsewhere I think.

I think Mike Smith is worth it.

Mostly, there aren't that many young up & rising NHL goalies with expiring contracts. Mike Smith is one of them. His contract expires with Phoenix after this year.
A lockout only means there is less NHL season to proven he is NOT the real deal.

Both Minnesota (Nik Backstrom on his last year of contract) and Toronto (???) will be opening up the purse-strings for Mr. Smith in the summer of 2013. I think he'll get a shot to sign with either. Smith's wife is a former olympic snow skiier so I see him heading back up North given the opportunity.

Mike Smith (TOR)
Mike Smith (MIN)

Nice ring to it... no?

I sure hope your wrong Bondon. I moved Huberdeau for him in my shallow keeper league as I needed goal tending. badly.

Everyone who values Mike Smith's as a "top 10" elite goalie is taking a major risk/leap of faith. Including myself.

I do think you need to fix your goaltending problem, what does the other GM want for Smith? If the price is right I would do it.

For the record I think Smith would fail in Toronto.

As a Smith owner in my main keeper league, it pains me to say that I agree with this statement 100%.

Smith's fantasy value is pegged to Dave Tippett (and Sean Burke) and the Phoenix Coyotes' defensive system, and if he signs somewhere else his value could absolutely fall off a cliff. I would dread seeing Smith moved to another club, but I would be poised and ready to snatch up whomever the Coyotes picked to start in goal.

In short, Smith might be a bit of a risk to go after until you can be sure he plans to stay in PhX for something longer than just short term. For the record, I think it would be worth it, but it's definitely a big risk. We've seen how poor his numbers can be elsewhere, so if he leaves Phx anything can happen.

Cheers.

I think what I might do, and what I encourage anyone with Smith to do, is providing he puts up more solid stats this year, and signs with another team somewhere else, sell him high. You may have to peg a draft pick or an up and comer with him but I plan on going after a Carey Price or Rask and see if I can get an owner to bite.
