Depends on how the users use them. Some of the RSS feeds I subscribe to send snippets to my Google Reader account and if it's interesting I go to the full post on that particular website. Then you have some feeds that send out the entire posts.

And no, business based on web traffic doesn't need users to come to the website. That ended years ago. I know Google has been running adsense in RSS feeds for years.

RSS is just more convenient. Why should you go out hunting for your daily dose of information when you can have it delivered to you to browse at your convenience? Sometimes I might not check it for two or three days depending on how big my workload is and then I come home to about 700 new unread items. A few minutes later scanning through the headlines/post titles I might read 20 of them and I'm up to speed again.

We're talking news, random blog entries, posts on http://icanhas.cheezburger.com/ or whatever. You tailor it to be whatever updates you want. If I come across a site on the internet and it doesn't offer RSS feed I don't bother with the site because it's stuck in the stone-age.
