Just curious... is this a league on Yahoo!?

I only play my leagues on Yahoo!, but I'll tell you something about Yahoo!
They rank players at the start of the season themselves, it's called O-Rank.
They also have an actual player rank for past statistics, called "Rank".

The "Rank" is an accurate portrayal of a player's value in a standard set of 6-categories: G,A,+-,PIM,PPP,SOG. ONLY those six categories.

So players are sorted according to those categories only.
HITS is not built-in, so you should be giving players a BOOST based on the hits they actually provide.
And you would have to downgrade them if they have good PIM.
For a guy like Hamonic, you'd decrease his value without PIM and re-increase it with HITS.... so he's pretty level.
For a guy like Seidenberg, there's not a lot of PIM, so you wouldn't decrease him to much and there are plenty of HITS... so a small BOOST over his Yahoo! value.
Overall, I like both guys in a HITS league above their standard Yahoo! rank.

I actually like both Seidenberg & Hamonic in this format.
I'd rather have a 30pt defenseman that is a HUGE hitter over a 45pt defenseman that doesn't hit. (say, Keith Yandle)

So... I'd say it's a pretty good team.
(anyways, I said a lot for nothing if this isn't a Yahoo! league)

Thanks to everyone for the advice and insight so far.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that I joined a league who has been around for 6 years or so. One of the league's rules is that new owners can not keep any players their first year. They put the keeper picks as your last two, so I was limited on which players were available.

My strategy for the draft was to get great goaltending and players who had high goals, SOG, and/or hits. Might have been a flawed strategy but hopefully I can learn a great deal from this site.

Some of the available free agents:

[F]: D. Krejci, B. Marchand, T. Oshie, S. Weiss, M. Michalek J. Williams, D. Stepan, R. Clowe, W. Simmonds, R. Malone, B. Boyle, M. Hanzal, N. Yakupov, D. Clarkson, M. & N. Foligno, B. Dubinsky, B. Schenn, R. O'Reilly, T. Ruutu

[D]: R. McDonagh, J. Garrison, E. Johnson, J. Boychuk, S. Robidas, J. Falk, F. Kuba, M. Vlasic, Z. Bogosian, F. Beauchemin, D. Kulikov, N. Leddy, N. Nikitin, S. Voynov, J. Gardiner, J. Pitkanen

ESPN's Player Rater is excellent (much better than Yahoo's equivalent) so that is a good way to judge player values. Don't have anything to add that hasn't been covered by the other guys.

Without looking too deeply, I like your team so far - Marchand's +/- and his decent cross the board contributions in other cats certainly makes him attractive. Oshie would be a nice add as well - for this season alone I am not convinced Yakupov is the best pick-up but he is certainly a player.

There is a lot of potential on FA as your league is a little shallow - are there any restrictions on FA pickups through the season?

In a keeper league, Yakupov is extremely difficult to pass up. Even for his trade value alone, he's worth picking up. I would drop Hodgson for him in a heartbeat.

This is huge! Absolutely pick up Yakupov over Hodgson and Oshie.

First off not only welcome to the boards, welcome to the sport! Pretty impressive team you drafted for being new to hockey.

Just so I have this straight, you won't be able to keep any players after this season? So if you drop Hodgson for Yakupov, you wouldn't be able to keep Yak? If that's the case, I would drop Hodgson but grab Oshie instead. He'll help you out more this season than Yak will, I think. However, if I misread that and you can keep players after this season, I'd pick up Yak.

I would drop Hamonic for Kulikov. You could use a little more scoring and Kulikov will get more points this year than Hamonic. Plus he'll have more STP and SOG, while not hurting you in the hits department....expect 130-140 compared to 160-170 for Hamonic.

Even still I would take Yakupov over Oshie. If someone offered Oshie for Yakupov, I doubt it would be accepted. Yakupov is worth picking up even if its just to trade him away for a gain. He will fetch a better return than Oshie will.
