The biggest flaw in your argument is you seem to think just because he has Ovie and Backstrom, that his team's fortunes will hinge on the performance of Washington alone... which is not the case. He also has other studs like Benn, Parise, Eberle, Kane, Miller, etc. There is no reason to "go for broke" with a poor risk/reward proposition like Green. If he's in a tight race at the end of the season, the difference between a healthy Edler and an injured Green will cost him the championship.

To each his own
Every team will have their Benn, Parise, Eberle, Kane and Miller... one team will have Franzen another Eriksson, another Pominville, another Heatley. Those guys will essentially cancel each other out IMO. The difference makers to me will be Ovy and Backstrom. If they go back to their "08-10" ways then the OP has a great shot at winning this cause he's gets better value out of his difference makers than his opponents do at those same positions.

That's where I guess my "go for broke" mentality comes from. If he's going to win, it's going to come down to the Caps boys. If Ovy and Backstrom do well, they help offset someone else's Crosby/Stamkos/Malkin/Giroux/Sedin... If they do poorly, it doesn't matter if Benn Parise Eberle all reel off 80+ points, he'll still lose because of the lack of production from Ovy and Backstrom...

What I'm saying is if his team's fate is largely dependant on the production of the Washington boys, then why not go all in and grab Green as well and cover all the bases.

With that said, that's what I would do in his situation, and it all depends on whether or not he's even willing to go down that route. Or if the Green owner is even willing to move him for Edler... There's no right or wrong answer until after this all plays out then we can draw a retrospective conclusion.

For me I just don't know if Edler has enough oomph to get him over the line in first place.

But you are right to each their own.
