Offensively you're spectacular, but your D and G could end up hurting you.

i'm not use to pool with cats but it looke like you put everything on offense and you should be ok if Carlson and EJ have solid season !!!
Crawford is not the best back up but you should be fine. maybe try to package a F to get better back-up goalie ?? maybe even a solid one.. for exemple Vanek + Zajac for elite G.....you can put other names to start.... something like this... Still a good draft.

I like the team on a whole...
Backstrom, Benn and Roy should be a good set of C... Good set of wingers as well with Ovy, Parise, Eberle, Semin and Kane A few ? with D, Edler could be good, but the depth is starting to pile up in Van with Bieksa, Hamhuis, Garrison, Ballard and Edler... Souray is a big ?, but I own him in a few leagues and as long as he stays healthy he should be a great own QBing the Ducks PP. Carlson and EJ are great depth players. What I might suggest doing, is since you already have Backstrom and Ovechkin, see if you can complete the trio and go after Green as well. You might as well take a feast or famine approach and gamble on the Caps reverting back to their offensive ways. If you get Backstrom, Ovy and Green that could possbly be 3 PPP every PPG they score. Can you post the owner's team who has Green? And I'll see if I can come up with a decent offer? If you moved say Edler + Eberle (soft in PIM, +/- and SOG) for Green + a winger you could come out on top. With Vanek you're getting more SOG and PIM over Ebs anyway, so losing Ebs isn't a massive problem... Another big ? area as other have pointed out is your G. Miller is good, so a lot of the outcome of your season will depend on Crawford. If he returns back to rookie form, you'll do very well in this league, if he's crappy again, all the stats that Miller puts up will be cancelled out. Lindback is ok, but you probably want a bit of a "safer" option.

Overall, I like the OP's team a lot... I don't think the D is as weak as the others seem to think. Given the goalie cats, if you could deal one of your excess wingers + Crawford to add a 2nd solid goalie to your rotation, I think you'll be in very good shape. Thanks for the input so far!
It was a decision made before the draft that I would pick my D-men with last picks (excluding Edler, who is a stud and going nowhere ). There are so many ? marks regarding d-men and so many potential d-men hoovering around 40 points (I think all of my last 3 picks/d-men are) that I decided to "stack" wingers who have, for some reason, most value as a trade bate if necessary. Goalies are also "overpaid" if you try to trade for them. I've been in this league with these gyus for almost a decade so I know that it won't be easy to get elite winger or goalie via trade.I agree that I might sink with my goalies. I have fingers crossed for the success of Crawford and Lindbäck I think Miller and Buffalo will bounce back and have a very good season (or not if lockout drags on).I was thinking if I could go after Getzlaf by offering Eberle? Is it worth it? The Getzlaf owner has also Kopitar and M Koivu (+Sharp, Marleau, Lecavalier, Ott) for C-slot.

You also have to consider his competition as well. You have Bieksa, Hamhuis, Garrison, Ballard there too who will take points off of him. Who does Green have for competition. As long as he is healthy, he'll get prime opportunity in WSH. Carlson or Orlov isn't going to steal time away from him. With Green we know that he has much higher upside, we've seen 73 and 76 from him before, the only issue with Green is his health. If you make the argument to say that you prefer Edler's limited upside but he has a better health record then fair enough. But to say Green sucks doesn't really say much... With Ovy, Backstrom and Green I'm thinking of taking a feast or famine approach. If you have the big 2 of a team you might as well go all in and take the 3rd. If the Caps are going to go back to offense-first, Ovy and Backstrom would do well anyway, adding a Green could push you over the top, much more than a 50-point Edler would... If they're gonna suck, Edler could score 65 or 75 and you'd lose anyway, so no big loss there. So for me might as well roll the dice with Green and pin your hopes on the Caps... My 2 cents.

"As long as he's healthy"... well that's a big statement right there that I don't think needs further elaboration.
In the time that he HAS been healthy, Green has played 49 and 32 games in the last 2 seasons... during that time he's scored 27 and 7 points... what's so impressive about that? People need to get over the 70 point days... that was a different time and a different system. It think it is foolish to think of that as his "upside" today... that is fool's gold. It's like saying Jonathan Cheechoo's upside is 50+ goals... As for Edler... I would hardly say Bieksa, Hamhuis, Garrison and Ballard are "competition"... are you kidding me? All you did was name all of their defensemen lol. Edler RUNS that PP and none of those guys are remotely a threat to take his spot. If anything, I would say Orlov and Carlson (who both actually have real offensive talent) are more of a threat to Green than the likes of such offensive juggernauts as Hamhuis and Ballard to Edler LOL. Edler is not a "decent and safe" option. He was #7 in d-man scoring last season... and his point trajectory has been rising every single year for the last 5 years (the complete opposite of Green). If you call that "decent and safe" then so be it, but I think you are way underestimating him. Your feedback is usually golden Ryan, but I think advising the OP to trade Edler + Eberle for Green + winger is a horrible call. Last edited by blayze; 10-06-2012 at 06:26 PM. |

Also what you have to consider is that in those injury shortened seasons, you can't consider that "healthy", healthy is playing the majority of games symptom free... When you miss 33 and 50 games I wouldn't consider those "healthy" games played. What you also have to keep in mind is that the last 2 seasons the Caps as a whole also slumped offensively. They reverted to a defense first system and put offense to the back burner. I'm assuming that with the new hire of Oates, that they're changing the system. Whether it'd be more offensive perhaps even more defensive we won't know? I guess that's where my gamble would be that they get back to the good ol days of offense... You also need to keep "upside" and "reality" separate. "Upside" literally means upside as in what's the most points he could realistically put up given the "perfect" system. Green's upside is well past point-per-game (we've seen it done before)... Edler's upside is maybe 65 points... Does that mean each will hit upside, no it doesn't. But Green, given his situation, has a much higher potential upside than Edler as we've seen in the past. Vancouver's D corps is definitely much more competitive than Washington's... Take a look at the TOI break down and range in point production... Edler 49 P, 23:51, 3:26 Bieksa 44 P, 23:38, 1:43 Hamhuis 37 P, 23:25, 1:51 Salo 25 P, 20:26, 2:45 Ballard 7 P, 15:33, 0:12 Let's assume that Garrison replaces Salo and fills in the production. You essentially have 4 20+ and essentially 2 PP min blue-liners on the team. My assumption is that the PP TOI is going to be split, which will of course level out the blue-liner scoring. I'm not saying Bieksa, Hamhuis or Garrison will boot Edler off the unit 1 PP, but the time will be shared amongst them. Some shifts it'll be Edler, some will be Hamhuis/Garrison... You won't see Edler garnering 4+ like a Letang, Campbell, Del Zotto, Boyle... Now look at WSH. Wideman 46 P, 23:54, 3:16 Carlson 32 P, 21:51, 1:25 Orlov 19 P, 16:52, 0:44 Green 7 P, 21:02, 2:43 Hamrlik 13 P, 19:13, 0:26 The biggest change is of course Wideman going, that frees up a whopping 24 mins and 3:16 on the PP back to Green, Carlson and Orlov... Would you be all that surprised to see Green revert back to the 25:28 and 5:03 numbers that be posted back in 09-10? Edler is 100% a "decent and safe" option. And you essentially showcased that. He's the #7 defensive scoring leader last season! NUMBER 7!! Last time I checked you don't win very many fantasy titles with a #7 in scoring... You win championships if you land NUMBER 1!!!. Number 7 basically keeps on you pace with the rest of the pack. Number 1 is where it gives you the edge to win. Imagine if you got the 7th best goalie in the league, 7th best forward in the league and 7th best blue-liner in the league? Would you win a title? Where you win fantasy titles is owning the best player at each position, so that it gives you the edge over every single one of your competitors and the rest of the areas you need to keep pace. With Green that's where you swing for the fences. If he busts out for 70+ you win, if he pulls off 40-50 you keep pace with the rest of the pack and still lose. If he gets hurt, you join the rest of the league as a loser... The odds of winning a fantasy championship is very slim 1 in 10 (if you're in a smallish league), 1 in 14 (if you're in a medium league), and 1 in 16 (if you're in a large league)... So I mean the odds are against you either way. Think about the scenario I discussed earlier... Green's production will go hand in hand with Ovy and Backstrom. If the Caps do well the "big 3" will all do well. If they suck all 3 will suck and you're toast anyways since he owns Ovy and Backstrom. Lets say Ovy and Backstrom get back to elite status... Edler puts up his "normal" 50 point status, does he win? The owner who owns Green could off set some of Ovy and Backstrom's production, and if he has a strong enough team could beat him... Now if you owned Ovy, Backstrom and Green and they all get back to elite status, is anyone going to stop them? He essentially secures all of the Caps points... Easy walkover win for him. Lets say Ovy and Backstrom both suck... Edler miraculously has a breakout season and posts 65 points. Is that enough to win a championship? Probably not... Ovy and Backstrom do decent, Edler posts a normal 50, enough to win? Probably not... What you said does make sense if you look at it individually from a trade perspective (without context). Edler and Eberle is a "safe and decent" option. You can't finish last in a pool with Edler and Eberle, but my question is can you win it? Does Edler and Eberle have the potential to set you apart from the rest of your competition? There is a lot of risk involved with Green, but when you own both Ovechkin and Backstrom, that's where you can afford to gamble and go all in, especially when you have coverage in Carlson too...

I read your entire post and appreciate the effort and thought you put into it. While you raise some good points, on the whole I found the entire post convoluted and unconvincing.
The biggest flaw in your argument is you seem to think just because he has Ovie and Backstrom, that his team's fortunes will hinge on the performance of Washington alone... which is not the case. He also has other studs like Benn, Parise, Eberle, Kane, Miller, etc. There is no reason to "go for broke" with a poor risk/reward proposition like Green. If he's in a tight race at the end of the season, the difference between a healthy Edler and an injured Green will cost him the championship. To each his own
