Hey all,

The league in my sig which I commish needs a little bit of change to take the weight off the goalies. The names that come off the board in the first two rounds is a little ashtonishing Anderson, Lindback, and Neuvirth were all top 2 round picks and we don't allow anyone to keep their top 2 round picks so most of the big names (Stamkos, Crosby, Ovechkin et al.) are there too. While some teams carry only 2 goalies, the teams that place in the top 3 year after year normally carry 4 to 5.

I'm thinking about scaling back the stat categories to W, S%, and SO only. A manager in the league suggested having only 1 starter per day in stead of 2. Another wanted to abolish keeping goalies.

What would be your suggestions?

I think taking down one goalie category would be sufficient. Goalies would still be important but they are important in real life too. Instead of 5/13 (38.4%) you would have 4/12 (33.3%).

To me it comes down to SV vs GAA. If you want to reward workhorses, drop GAA.

I agree with this. Remove GAA & keep the other four: W,SV%,SV,SO.
Also, consider adding POINTS as a category. That's the absolute BEST way to put weight back on skaters.
Very few leagues do this... but it's a terrific move, IMO.

GAA has a lot to do with the "team" in front of a goalie.
SV% most purely reflects the goalie's talent, so keep that.

In ROTO, if you go with 4 categories, I don't think you can have both GAA & SV%.


Side story:
I was in a ROTO league last year with 4 goalie cats (W,GAA,SV%,SO).
One GM got an amazing first game from Jimmy Howard (1 goal against, I think) and then traded away his goalies.

In the 13-team league, he locked up 1st in GAA & 1st in SV%.
He punted Wins & SO, so he finished last in those.

But essentially, it freed up his entire roster to be skaters and he basically dominated (1sts) in every skater cat.

It created a really unbalanced league. He sprang SO far ahead of everybody that the entire league (except one feisty little Pengwin) gave up and lost interest.

Oh... what about that little Pengwin. Yes, he stuck around and crawled to 2nd in every skater category with the rest of the league on vacation. And because I had good goalies, I also did well enough in the goalie cats to win the entire league (like 100pts to 99pts).

which highlights the reason that you should also have a min. games played for goalies in roto...

adding points has been great for our league. it puts more weight on the stats you want most.
gaa would be what id drop for goalies. saves as a cat. help teams to want to finnish their goalie games.

You could add games started as another option to take the emphases off goalie ratios - much tougher to punt 3 cats. Adding FOW is another option to increasing skaters cats.
