Default Joni Pitkanen

Hey guys.. I finished my draft a couple days ago and was surprised to see the Joni Pitkanen was not taken.. My defense is below. Its points only. Is he an upgrade to any of these Dmen?

Byfuglien
Ehrhoff
Giordano
Visnovsky
Gardiner
Elliott
J.Schultz

My options are...
Pick up Pitkanen and drop a defender.
Pick up Andy Mcdonald or Hudler and drop Anisimov
Pick up Halak and drop Anisimov

Tough call. It depends on whether you think you can win either this year or next, in which case he might be a better option than Gardiner or Elliott. Also, since you can only protect 14, it might be that you'd end up not retaining either of those guys at the end of this year, in which case you should definitely look to swap in a guy (like Pitkanen) who will be an upgrade for this season.

Also, a case could be made that in a pure points league like yours a guy like Pitkanen could carry more value than Giordano, as both are the same age and Giordano has less value in leagues that don't count peripherals like hits and blocked shots.

In terms of your other options, I like McDonald and Halak for your team, dropping Anisimov and one of the three defensemen I mentioned.

Yeah if you are not planning on keeping Gardiner or Elliot, I think he outpoints them this year, possibly Schultz too. All three are excellent long-term options though.

And I would also do either of those drop Anisimov moves, most likely Halak if you can carry 3 G's, since your F's look pretty deep. I would also be keeping Granlund over Elias, if your bolds are the ones you plan on keeping.

The bolds were my keepers from last year. I added Granlund in the draft this year.. I'm sure he will replace Elias this year..

I can carry three goalies but only 2 count.. I get 2 points a win and 2 points a shutout.. Because of Halak's 1/2 starts with Elliott he may not count however he's great insurance in case Howard slips or a Goalie gets injured..

I'd drop Elliott or Schultz for Pitkanen since it doesn't look like any of those guys are keepers.

Tricky question with the Anisimov drop. How many do you start at each position, because Halak could be some nice insurance just in case and trade bait to get a deal from a GM who's hurting in goal.

We dont start positions or anything it's a all year long points league. No positional requirments other then the counters below..

-Top 12 Forwards count
-Top 5 Defense count
-Top 2 Goalies count

Then we have 5 other spots (bench i guess) we can pick and choose. I usually go with 3 spare forwards, one spare dman, 1 spare goalie..

I don't think Anisimov is a great option in a one-year setting, so looking at alternatives is a good idea. I also agree with Bondon about dropping one of the rookie dmen for Pitkanen. I would drop Elliott since Schultz is virtually guaranteed to make it on the Oilers.

Dumping Anisimov for Halak would be almost automatic for me - don't assume that they will continue with the goalie rotation in St. Louis either - I really like Halak to hedge your bets in goal here.

I think Elliott is probably the right drop to take Pitkanen. Love me some Elliott but not this year for you.
