My Autograph
Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins were coming to town in a week to play the Calgary Flames on January 17th 2001. I had never seen Mario play live before and I knew this would be my only chance to do so since he just came out of retirement and I knew he wasn’t going to stick around long. I forked out $75.00 a ticket to get second deck seats at the Calgary Saddledome. I was finally going to see Mario play live.
Mario didn’t disappoint either collecting a goal and 3 assists for a 4 point night. Multiple times during the game the Calgary fans were chanting “Mario! Mario! Mario” It got so loud that I would bet everyone there had goose bumps. After the game I decided that I wanted Mario’s autograph. I had never gotten a NHL player’s autograph before. We made our may to the autograph area where we got ushered it a corner with 30 other fans. We had a small area where we need to stay but because Mario was in town the fans kept coming and coming to seek their own autographs. By the time the players started coming out the 30 fans turned into 100. To make things worse the earlier you there the further you were away from the players. I was now 5 people deep to where the players would pass by. Out first to sign autographs was Darius Kasperitus in which he did until someone called him Alexei Kovalev and then he said screw you and left! That was pretty funny! Only some of the players were signing autographs that night. Even former Calgary Hitmen star Kris Beech snubbed the home town fans by not signing autographs and he got boo’s from the crowd. What an ass! Things got really loud once Mario came out. Everyone was cheering and chanting his name. Slowly Mario made his way down the line and came up to the spot where I was standing! I was so excited! I was going to get Mario’s autograph! Like everyone else I reached out my arm with my program for Mario to sign. Excitement soon turned to disappointment as he did not grab my program as he proceeded down the line! I doubt that he could see me as I am only 5’7” tall! Out of desperation I yelled “MARIO!!” He stopped, turned back and looked right at me as I raised my program back up. He took a couple of steps back and grabbed my program and signed it for me. He smiled at me as he gave the program back to me as if he knew that he was my idol growing up and he had made my dream come true.

Great story. I have never been a big autograph guy. I prefer getting pictures with them than an autograph but thats just me.
