Hey there Dobberites, this is in regards to Keeper Team #2 in my sig. I recently took over for this team, only to find out the previous owner traded away my 1st and 3rd round pick...my first pick is in the 2nd round (22nd overall). Now I am told the 3rd overall pick is available.
Now, who on my team should I be willing to give up for a 3rd overall pick? The other team needs a LW/RW, or maybe a C. All of the 2012 draftees are available, AND our prospects points count right away, so players that can play/produce now are VERY valuable. Yakupov is going #1, not sure on #2. I know that I am NOT going to give-up Stamkos/Brown/Byfuglien/Luongo. But who of these should I offer: J.Thornton, C.Kunitz, M.Koivu, M.Ribeiro, OR J.Iginla. I want it to be fair or overpay slightly, but not overpay too much. Thanks for any help you can offer, rep will be given!

Of the guys you list my first offer would be Thornton. I think there are worse things than going into a season (whenever that happens) with Stamkos, Koivu and Ribiero as your centres. In fact, I think it might be addition by subtraction because Ribs has a pretty nifty gig right now in Washington, and I'd be looking for ways to keep him, if I were you. The fact that Jumbo Joe is tearing the Swiss league apart right now might help you sell him as well, so I'd be looking to exploit that. I wouln't let go of Koivu because of their offseason additions. Kunitz is chronically undervalued in fantasy hockey, so I would guess he won't be interested. Iginla would be the guy I'd look at next, if he's not interested in Thornton.
The only potential problem is that these guys are all older. Is this guy going to take a shot this year? If he's a basement dweller, which the 3rd overall could indicate, then he might not have any interest in any of these guys. What does his team look like? Who would you be looking at drafting? Since prospects scoring counts in your league I assume that rookie defensemen don't go until much later than normal, so the chance that Murray goes 2nd is slim. I'll bet Galchenyuk goes 2nd, leaving you with Grigorenko. So I'd start with Joe, and see what happens. Good luck!

In a 14x8 league, that's 112 keepers.
I've been helping a buddy with his 13x8 keeper league and I can tell you that typically only the #1 overall draft pick (Yakupov, RNH, T.Hall, Stamkos), sometimes the #2 pick (Seguin, Landeskog) are deemed keepers after their first year. In other words, there's often a drop-off to that #3 keep. If you are NOT taking a highly-touted rookie then you are just grabbing the 115th best player in the NHL. That guy will NOT be better in multi-cat than Kunitz, M.Koivu, or Joe Thornton. In short - I don't think your team gets any stronger by getting that #3 pick. Now, if somebody will give you the #3 pick for M.Koivu... you might consider it, because Ribeiro isn't THAT far off M.Koivu and the #3 pick gives you a considerable upgrade over your last pick. But from a "Future Keepers" standpoint, trading any of your top 8 keepers away and promoting Ribeiro (or the #3 pick) does NOT make your team any stronger... AND... with your void of draft picks, you really need to be realistic about your lack of chance to win THIS year and therefore you should be building your keepers for NEXT year. My 2 cents. Hold pat & work the draft. |

Except that his prospect keepers are pretty mediocre and adding a Grigorenko or Galchenyuk to replace one of them is then worth Thornton for that pick and keep Ribs for now. So I would make the Thornton offer.

Awesome replies Pengwin7!! (rep given...yet again!)
Here is the other GM's team: C-Crosby, Spezza, Horcoff LW- Cammalleri, Penner, Smyth RW- Franzen, Hemsky, Hornqvist D-Green, Chara, Markov, Pronger G-Hiller, Nabokov Prospects: Hall, Johansen, Carlson, Pacioretty, Montoya, Zibanejad, Kadri You make perfect sense, except I forgot to clarify, it is protect 8 roster players + and up to 4 prospects...so your top prospects (>150 games) are FREE keepers!! So that #3 pick could be very valuable as a prospect (ie: Galy, Greigs). I to like M.Koivu and M.Ribeiro as potential great value players this year. But Ribeiro is a #2C...unless Backstrom gets injured. Thanks for the reply Shoeless (rep given), you are correct my prospects are weak! One other issue is it seems teams are heavy on goalies. 14 team league, start 2, but it seems lots of teams are protecting 2 or 3... I just can't justify protecting Theodore. But should I try to trade for another goalie? As you both have advised I will offer Thornton and hope he likes him. But if not do you think I am OK riding in to the draft with what I have?

I think there is a time to chase and a time to let it flow to you. In your case, you are in pretty rough shape even for a 14 team league and I think your time isn't now. Chasing a goalie right now is going to be tough to do and expensive. I would probably just take what you can in the draft, build your keepers to the extent you can and strengthen your prospects.

I trade (Keeper League 2 in sig): J.Thornton (C) FOR 2012 3rd Overall + M.Ribeiro (C) (essencially I get to keep him if I trade Joe) 3rd overall will most likely be Galy or Grigs. The way I see it, M.Ribeiro is close to Big Joe in most cats, less in points but more hits. He is a year younger as well. BUT Joe is a #1 C in SJ, where as Ribs will be #2 in WSH...but he will get #1 PP time. And as you noted before, my prospects are REALLY weak!
