I can't help but think that I will be behind in terms of quality since the elite players will probably be gone.
What do you guys think? Scoring categories are: Players -> G, A, PTS, +/-, SHOTS, PIM, SHP, PPP, GWG Goalies -> W, GAA, SV%, SO |

You're not screwed. Drafting at that position is about capitalizing on guys who slip through the cracks. Perhaps a guy like Backstrom will be available at that position. Or Parise or Kovalchuk. You won't get a Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux, Ovechkin, but there's always value to be had. And you'll likely want to use your second round pick to secure your number 1 goalie. So in fact that's something that is to your advantage. Pick of the goalies

Depending on the format you have a few strategic options. as pointed out you grab whoever falls through the cracks or you could make a deal by securing 2 goalies. With 16 teams, goalies will be at a premium especially if you start more than one.

No, it's not fun picking late but it's not that bad of a position to be in. It does blow watching the most elite go early, but if you do your research and are prepared you can secure two top flight players. I picked late in both my regular season pool and playoff pool and secured 2nd place in both. You might be able to land a player like Eberle, Parise, Kovy, Staal or James Neal. On the return up the board, grab a goalie (lundy, quick, rinne). Having a top 3 pick is nice, but it feels like forever for the 2nd pick to arrive. Have fun with it and good luck!

You'll be fine. You should definitely be able to get a damn good goalie with one of your first two picks.

The 2 goalie route is what I was talking about. Getting a 2nd tier goalie and a solid player(s) for an elite goalies might be a solid move in a new league. It all depends on how things unfold.

A vital piece of information is still missing in order to give you the best advice: what type of league?
If it's a roto league then goaltending is crucial to being competitive - I would definitely draft one early but even consider two depending on who's available. If not two, then I would get one at pick 47 or 50. With shutouts as infrequent as they are, they will have a significant effect on the standings as each one accummulated could gain significant points. A guy like Halak could be good value beyond the top tier. Or if Halak's gone, then Hiller is another one. If it's a H2H league goaltending is still important but more to ensure you remain competitive and get into the playoffs. One high end is important but a second capable, regular starter could be enough. As well, since shutouts will likely be ties most weeks, really you only have three goalie categories to nine skater ones. Furthermore, the type of league is important when deciding on which offensive players you go after. In a roto league you need balance across the board to be competitive, as every category counts. In a h2h league balance is important but since you are playing week to week, you can get away with being slightly weaker in a couple categories if you are strong in others. Do you know the other managers? If so, any idea whether you feel a big goalie rush will go early?
