I feel your pain. It happens to us all. All we can do is gather data and have a gut feeling until things become more obvious, e.g. teams separate themselves from the pack, making predictability a lot easier. I hear you about redemptive stories. I've been bitten by them as well. I try not to make emotional decisions. I'm a Steelers fan and I generally go out of my way not to own any.
