I am drafting in a new 10 team H2H keeper league tonite, and currently have pick #8.
Stats are Offense (13) - G, A, P, PPP, SHP, GWG, SOG, FOW, PIM, +/-, Hits, Blocks Defense (5) - GS, W, GAA, SV% , SHO Would you trade picks #8 (1.08) and #13 (2.03) for #2 overall? Would draft one of the top 3 (Stamkos, Crosby, Malkin). My next pick wouldn't be until #28.

Would I? No doubt on that one. A Stamkos or Malkin and decent free agent signing is almost certainly going to beat the 8th and 13th.

Well I would love to be the other guy in this trade for sure - he is picking his 4th player while you are still waiting to make your 2nd selection. Although that's a little irrelevant to your question.
I guess you need to assess the value of gaining a stud vs taking 2 very high end players. For arguments sake let's just use Yahoo ranking to indicate what you might get in the way of two players - assume Stamkos, Malkin, Giroux, Crosby, Ovechkin, and Lundie go in the first 6 - would you be happier to end up with Quick or Rinne and someone like Neal or Backstrom or guys like Tavares and Rask? Seems to me it's a lot of eggs in one basket - you do this and yeah you end up with a stud but then live with the recovery period of gaining back that depth you gave away early in the draft. The replacement player Dongjohnson is talking about comes at the very end of the draft when you go to FA - not much of a prize methinks. Some will do it, some won't - I wouldn't because I want a couple of young solid pieces on any new team I draft and I want to cover the net and a skater position early in the pool.

Let us know what yor decide to do and how the first round of the draft goes down, cdubb - curious as hell on these kinds of decisions.

There is no way I make that trade. Giving up the 13th pick to go up 6 spots is too high a price.
8,13,28 >> 2,28 Signing a "good" free agent has no bearing on the decision since you can do that regarless of making the trade. Just using Dobber's Rankings: HSedin and Kopitar >> Stamkos and free agent player. Personally, I'd try to get Lundqvist in one of the picks so I could focus on the BPA at pick #28. If you could do #8 Lundqvist #13 Backstrom- I'd definitely take it over the #2. (naturally, it is a big IF) And the other benefit of not making the trade is that you spread out your injury risk. If you make that trade and your Stamkos/Malkin/Crosby goes down, your team is in serious trouble since your elite depth is not as great. There are benefits to having elite players in shallow leagues but I just don't like the amount of risk you're taking on by making the trade. Let us know how you do. Interesting discussion. |

pt9889 thinks alot like I do - I suppose there is some value in considering that it is only a 10 team league so there will be less pressure from goalies being taken and now that I know it is a weekly starts league with 2 goalie slots - there is a little more strength to making such a trade. I'm still slightly on the other side of the fence.
How many keepers do you have at season's end?

Hmmm 12 isn't a lot and not a little - more bias to making the deal though.
I don't know cdubb - a stud goalie and a very good skater would still be my preference.

Ok I will hold off on trading.
With scarcity of elite RW pick Perry or Neal over Tavares? Our league allows us to keep the positional eligibility we draft with so Neal would be LW and RW eligible.
