Default Mr. Iginla? How pissed are you right now?

I was browsing capgeek.com last night and looked at the potential UFA crop for 2013 as I feel this season is all but a loss and I'm starting to look towards next year. There are definitely some very intriguing players set to become UFAs such as Getzlaf, Perry, Lupul, Semin, Howard, Smith (PHX), Edler, Streit, etc...and then there's Iginla...

I own Iginla in a dynasty league and this lockout is obviously affecting his future value. Lets face it, a 35yr old normally sees his production decrease as he nears retirement (unless you're a freak like Selanne). He was set to make $7M this year to finish out his contract. That's seems insane to me that he has to give up this year's salary when he knows his "bread-earning days" are coming to a close.

So I ask, Mr. Iginla...how pissed are you right now?

Considering the contract that Doan got, I don't see Iginla getting much less than 6.5M per season based on 2011-12 contracts. Who knows what that'll scroll back to with a new CBA.

This is the sticking point. I think he could get 6.5-7 million under the old CBA. We don't know what the new CBA will look like but the money will definitely be compressed for a couple years until things adjust themselves. In the roto guide I predicted 6 million for him but he could even take a discount to get an ideal situation or stay in Calgary.

What do you think? He stays or moves on to a serious contender?

the way feaster has been throwing money around and his apparent refusal to rebuild....I see Iginla signing another contract with the Flames. But I see him getting traded at some point...

I agree with this. He'll likely stay. He's the heart and soul of CGY similar to Doan in PHX. However, my original point is that he's essentially foregoing $7M this season and he's 35yrs old. It's not like Crosby who makes more but realizes he has a ton of years left to make more scratch. Iggy likely has what, 3-4 years left max? And he just threw one away where he was set to make $7M....that's a massive pill to swallow.

I'm just using Iggy in this example but there are several older players in the same situation and I'm surprised they haven't been more vocal like Harmlik.

Iginla has made millions of dollars over his career. Millions. Sure, $7m would be nice, but you just have to hear what his rival on the Oilers, S. Horcoff, said when asked about having his contract wiped out...

"I've been fortunate enough to play long enough now where I've built security into my life and my family," he said. "For me, it's just a matter of doing what's right for the union and right for the players and just letting this thing play out."

Sometimes working conditions and setting the table for who's next is more important than another bunch of millions in a millionaire's pocket.

Iginla has lost 14 million due to lockouts (well, if the season is wiped out), and he has probably lost close to 80-100 goals, as well. Definitely one of the "hardest hit" NHLers.

The goals and points lost is an underrated side-effect. How many guys would've hit milestones and/or looked better to HHOF voters?

Brutal.
