if the sports want to be taken serioously and not be considered the disgrace that it has become, it doesn't matter how far down the list THAT clean guy is. you find him, and declare him the winner....

I have no direct evidence of this, but I would be willing to bet that Carl Lewis and, yes, crucify me now, even Michael Phelps, were doped up when they won their gold medals. There's just too much money involved now for people not to be seduced, and that dates back to Lewis' day.

Didn't read this in it's entirety so if it's been stated I apologize....Did he fail a drug test? Cuz I know he's taken numerous drug tests since his first win. So I am wondering if I missed something.

Never failed anything, but he has given up the fight due to endless harassment from people who want him to be found guilty.

I am really torn on the whole issue, but I don't like the witch hunt. I have a bro-in-law who is a biking fanatic and have had a few in-depth discussions with him on the issue. I trust his opinion since I am very naive when it comes to the whole bike racing world, but he feels as though he's "accepted" and believes that Armstrong was indeed doping, but that everyone was doing it and it doesn't take away from the fact he is a recovering cancer patient and won 7 titles in a row. Cheating or not, what he did was incredible and even if he was the only cheater the amount of time and effort he has put into his sport and fitness level is incredible. He doesn't like the idea of them going after him when there are so obviously a ton of others doing the same thing.
I struggle with this as I'm a believe that a cheater is a cheater whether or not others are/were doing it, but at the same time I really respect his opinion and can see how the term "witch hunt" comes into play. He argues that if you're going after Armstrong you should be going after all the others as well. It isn't fair to go after one person just becasue he's had so much success. It's definitely an ethics issue and I can't really decide where I stand. I don't like witch hunts and/or unfair treatment, but at the same time I don't like "cheating." Tough call. Feel badly for a guy, regardless, who has put all his heart into something and while doping has helped it hasn't made him who he is. The toughest thing for me to decide is whether or not it's "ok" for someone to get away with cheating because "everyone was doing it." This one goes back to childhood...

QUOTE:
"Lance Armstrong just got eviscerated by 60 Minutes. We already know that former teammate Tyler Hamilton said that he saw Armstrong take EPO, testosterone, and a blood transfusion during the Tour de France. CBS also says that George Hincapie told a grand jury that he saw it too. But the most damning revelation of all from tonight's broadcast, Hamilton said that Armstrong failed a drug test in 2001 and that Lance, with the help of the International Cycling Union (UCI), "took care of it." According to the 60 Minutes report that just aired, Armstrong got a personal meeting with the head of the lab who discovered his test. The lab director told the FBI in a sworn statement that the ICU arranged the unusual meeting and made it known that it didn't want the suspicious test to be investigated any further. Armstrong's strongest defense has always been that he has never failed a drug test, despite giving hundreds of blood and urine samples throughout his career. This story now calls that claim into serious question. Plus, as Hamilton pointed out, there are a lot of alleged drug users who never failed a test. Hamilton went years without failing one and Barry Bonds and Marion Jones (who spent time in jail after confessing during a government investigation) never failed one either. Armstrong has pre-emptively attacked Hamilton's credibility, but in our opinion he made a pretty compelling witness. He seemed shaken and nervous during the 60 Minutes interview, not because he was unsure of what he was saying, but because he understood the gravity of his testimony. He's destroying lives here, including his own, and doesn't seem like someone simply out for publicity or just a quick buck. Scott Pelley says in the video below that interviewing Hamilton was like "pulling teeth." The one thing Hamilton repeatedly emphasized is that he wasn't just accusing Armstrong, he was accusing himself, his other teammates, and pretty much every significant rider in cycling world. It now seems clear that every major team and rider in competitive cycling used some form of doping to improve performance, which both lends weight to his story and makes it incredibly unlikely that a clean rider could dominate the tour the way Armstrong did for nearly a decade." Why? If he cared about his legacy and what people think he would fight. Now he is just going to ride off into the sunset and let people judge for themselves, which he is allowed to do.
