No he wants Duchene, he's just trying to get as much as he can from me since I told him I was willing to overpay - so he's targeted Strome and given up on Toffoli + Palmieri.

I thought the first offer was doable. I know Duchesne had a down year and all, but your D is poor and needs an upgrade like this.
With his improved pick and a prospect I think you have to take it. I'd go with Eakin just because Dallas is thin on centres so I have to think he will get opportunities there.

Unless you're hell-bent on getting Pietrangelo, I think it's time to walk away for the time being. He's obviously not willing to negotiate and really hasn't made an effort to meet you halfway.
Would you consider approaching the GM(s) who own any of Shattenkirk, OEL, Doughty, Letang, Yandle etc? I'm sure that you could land one of them at a much better price that what the GM of AP is trying to get. I think its time to consider other options, and not necessarily being attached to AP as a must trade. Good luck!

I'm the other GM in this deal, so I'll pitch in for fun now that VV has received a fair bit of feedback.
From my side of the deal, I was upfront that I would only part with AP if he was willing to overpay. I'm really high on AP, and without him my D will take a temporary setback ... Wiz, Erhoff, Meszaros, Kindl and two holes are what I'll be left with. I do have some good D on the farm ... Hamilton, McNabb and Gormley. I'm weak at centre though, both pro level and on the farm ... I have Henrique, Krejci and then nobody very exciting. Duchene and Strome would improve my centre picture. However, I'm not building for this season, but rather for two and three seasons from now, so I have time to address my centre siutation, and therefore nothing short of an overpayment will spring AP from me ... and I was very clear and upfront about that with Vibe. As for Duchene and Strome, I like but don't love them. Duchene has stalled out and doesn't look like he'll develop into a great multi-cat fantasy stud. The fact Ryan O'Reilly at times shoved him to the wing last year is concerning. I like Strome too, and he could turn out to be an elite NHLer ... but he's a prospect, and prospects don't always develop as planned. Plus, he looks destined to be Robin to Taveres' Batman, and with the Isles drafting nothing but D this year, and the failure of some key prospects line Nino to develop, I'm a little concerned the Isles may not have enough good wingers to supply two lines any time soon. Without that 5th OA amateur pick therefore, the wheels come right off this deal for me. It would no longer be an overpayment ... which was clearly the ground rule at the start of our negotiations. No overpayment = no AP. So where we are with this deal leaves me wondering if I'm getting the overpayment I originally wanted ... or not. VV is the chaser in this deal though ... he's been after AP for a few weeks, so I finally agreed to spell out what it would take in the way of an overpayment to spring him. And I'm now waffling about whether I'm getting it. In fact, my first response was that it would take a "ridiculous overpayment" to spring AP. I think we're closer to just an overpayment than a ridiculous overpayment. Edit: What this deal boils down to is two guys who both have big woodys for the same player. Therefore normal trade values and logic kind of go out the window. It's been a fun trade to work on though ... and Vibe and I get along well so it's been friendly and enjoyable, not hostile. Edit2: Palmieri is a poison pill for me in this deal. Do not like. Do not want. Last edited by Ford Prefect; 07-31-2012 at 08:55 PM. |

VV and FP,
I can see both sides of the story here but as a unbiased outsider, the asking price of Duchene, Strome AND a high pick is beyond over-payment for Pietrangelo - especially since the deal equally addresses needs for both teams. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Pietrangelo owner myself and consider his value gold bar status but Duchene is still one of the best young centers in the game and could easily end up a steady 80-85 point threat as the Avalanche improve. Considering FP is weak up the middle and VV needs help on defense, I think a deal centered around AP and Duchene is a great one, but Strome and an elite pick are too many goodies added to the pot. FP has every right to expect an over-payment for his prized possession on D but I have to call it like I see it and say it would be foolish for Vibe to sink his teeth into this one as the deal stands now. Like I said, this deal has the makings of a nice win-win but if Strome is included the high pick shouldn't be. What do I consider a perfect deal here? Duchene Strome for Pietrangelo Rattie
