Default Doughty for Seguin... Rep Given!

Full on Dynasty Salary Cap Keeper league. I won the championship last year. My defense is very strong, my forwards are strong but not as strong as my D. Doughty is signed at 6.6 million for the next 5 years, whereas Seguin is signed at 3.3 mil for the next 3. I put Doughty on the block and was offered Seguin straight up for him. I personally think it's close, but think I need just a bit more than Seguin for him. Thoughts?

I would pull the trigger on that with pretty much any settings. Would probably be good to specify though.

Seguin comes with an great cap hit and if your defense is as strong you say it is then it just makes sense to me.

My $0.02

taking seguin would even your team out as regards defense and offense? does this matter to you? your a defending champ with an uneven defense to offense quality.
the cap hit makes seguin worth as much as doughty imo. i would not do the trade unless i needed the cap space though. do you have plans for the extra cap money or are you just trying to stay compliant due to raises. if your able to use the extra cap space to add more depth then you gotta take the trade.imo.

Hard to say without seeing your whole team, particularly what your D will look like without Doughty, who could be quite an answer if, as many (including me) think, his performance at the end of the season and in the playoffs will bode well for him returning to his 2010 self.

I see a lot of Bruins games, and no question Seguin is the real deal. But with Julien now signed for several more years, I question whether Seguin will be able to put up the stats he's capable of producing. Julien's offense is focused on rolling out 3-4 lines and not leaning too heavily on individual players. Look at Bergeron - on another team he probably could be 70+ points year in year out, but on the Bs he's a team first guy whose stats suffer for it.

All this being said, the salary differential is pretty significant, and the Kings of today are quite different than those of 2010 in that with Quick proving he's an elite netminder the team has been able to adopt a more defensive mindset.

I think you hit the nail on the head in thinking you should ask for more. Why not? If you can't get more, then staying where you are is not a bad option.

I'm leaning toward b0ndon's analysis in thinking you should make the deal.

But in the back of my mind, I'm nagged that we should perform our due diligence here. What are your league stats? It could be that defencemen score heavily in your league leading to your victory last year. If not, this is a deal to make.

Fair enough. It's a 24 team dynasty league, so the rosters are very deep. We count every stat that you could possibly imagine; G, A, S, +/-, Face offs, Hits, Blocks, PIM etc etc. We also count ice time and PK ice time, so players like Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh for me this year were huge even though they didn't put up really big offensive numbers. We dress 20 players a week which has to include 2 goalies. Most people dress 12F, 6D and 2G, though sometimes you see 11F, 7D and 2G. This is my pro roster:

Sidney Crosby
Patrice Bergeron
Olli Jokinen
Eric Belanger
Jim Slater
Shawn Matthias
Dana Tyrell

Patrik Elias
Vaclav Prospal
Jannik Hansen
Dan Paille
Scott Parse

Ilya Kovalchuk
Blake Comeau
David Perron
Kyle Okposo
Milan Hejduk
Jamal Mayers

Drew Doughty
Dan Girardi
Ryan McDonagh
Greg Zanon
Anton Babchuk
Mike Commodore
Paul Martin
Chris Campoli
Cam Barker
Anton Stralman
Matt Hunwick
Roman Polak
Nick Leddy
Shane O'Brien
Jeff Woywitka
Aaron Rome
Ryan Parent

Henrik Lundqvist
Cory Schneider
Peter Budaj
Curtis McElhinney

So, as you can see it's a pretty deep roster, and being that there is 24 teams, the last forwards and defense that you dress can be pretty weak, but can also make a huge difference. Thanks for the input, fellahs :-)

I do like Sequin, but prefer Doughty. Doughty IMO is a top 5 dman, while Seguin is maybe top 10 at his position. Similar upside relative to their positions, but Doughty is in a better position to have a major role right now and beyond - Segs is more future oriented.

I don't think it's a bad trade, but I would keep Doughty in this scenario. Elite offensive defensemen are hard to come by, meanwhile as great as Seguin is, his stat contribution is easier to replicate at C.

Your defense doesn't appear to be as deep as you would have led me to believe in your initial post (despite having those Ranger multicat studs).

I would only pull the trigger if you're having cap issues, but I doubt the extra $3M will make or break you.

Bottom line is you already have a championship team, and I expect Doughty will re-emerge as a top-5 this season. Why mess with a good thing?

man, its difficult, but i think with your team it would hard to pass up seguin straight up. maybe now itll look close but in a couple years from seguin will be top 5 player.
