From the article: – Were the Sabres aware of Roy’s shoulder issue upon dealing him? (Update: Yes, according to Heika. “He had shoulder pain last season and played through it.”) – Were the Stars aware of it upon acquiring him? (Update: Sorta, according to Heika. “He was cleared medically and this was discovered in a full physical in Dallas.”) – If so, was Dallas aware the procedure to fix it would require up to fourth months of rehab? (Update: Yes, according to Heika. “Stars felt now the time to fix it. Stars GM said Roy could have played through it, but ‘we want the best Derek Roy we can get.”’) In any case seems kinda fishy. Regeihr apparently already has a bad reputation as trade negotiator already in terms of how highly he tends to value his own assets- if there was any funny business here that reps not about to change- lol! In any case stars dont sound to heartbroken and it sounds like they have a vested interest going forward which actually bodes well for Roy owners down the road hopefully.

My question is, if they did know about this injury and the surgery normally takes this lengthy of a recovery, why on Earth would they wait for 8 weeks since his last game to have the surgery in the first place? He could be almost 2 months into his rehab had they done the surgery right away...

The surgery was optional, as opposed to necessary. Roy passed the Stars' primary physical. After a subsequent and more thorough exam, the Stars thought it would be best for Roy and the team to have the surgery.
That's really all there is to it. As far as Regier overvaluing his prospects...perhaps he does, but so what? I'd rather he err on the side of caution rather than giving away prospects irresponsibly. Besides, I wouldn't exactly take Brian Burke's criticisms as gospel.

The part about the trade being shady was pure conjecture on my part- just thinking out loud. I live in North Western Ontario and I totally agree Burkes word isnt gospel... its the law!

Wish I had known about this when I opted to take him over Mikko Koivu in a trade I made last year, uggh.

It was one of those ultra-annoying things. He was prepared to give me either Koivu or Roy and I was leaning towards Koivu, but just as I was pulling the trigger on the deal I got news that Koivu had just been injured the night prior - it didn't seem serious but, with championship aspirations, I didnt' want to take the risk of bringing in an injured player, so I asked for Roy instead. Oh well...
