Dubnyk, Reimer, Harding, Bobrovsky
My league counts W, S%, GAA. These four goalies will be available in the first round and I'd like to grab one with my 4th overall pick. (12 teams, keep 13). My first assumption is Dubnyk as he'll get plenty of starts and could surprise people. After that how would you rank the remaining 3? What are the chances Bob steals the job in CLB? Will the leafs give the reins to Reimer again? Will Backstrom be traded/injured making Harding the man to have?

Bobrovsky Reimer Harding What are the chances Bob steals the job in CLB? It is his to lose right now Will the leafs give the reins to Reimer again? If Luongo ends up in Florida chances are very good Reimer starts. Will Backstrom be traded/injured making Harding the man to have? Only team that would be interested would be Toronto. Chances of that happenning are very slim. |

God, given my history with goalie threads I wanted to stay away from this one with a 10 foot pole, but I kind of wanted to throw in a couple of comments.
I kind of see all these guys being on relatively the same tier, all with their pros/cons Dubnyk Pro- Finished the season strong last year, is a pretty big body who is starting to learn how to use it better. Con - Competition with Khabibulin, fresh off a new contract, pressure on Edmonton to be better this year Harding Pro - Last season until Harding suffered his injury, he and Backstrom were a pretty even split (slight game-started edge to Backstrom). I remember posting in another thread that from November until Harding was injured I think he had only started one or two games less than Backstrom. Improved team overall up front, Backstrom in the last year of his contract, if the Wild flounder Backstrom could be dealt, which would be acceptable given the emergence of Matt Hackett Con - Injury history, competition with Backstrom Bobrovsky Pro - New city, fantastic work ethic from what I have heard. Playing behind a goalie that has been a sieve for the past 3 seasons. Con - I still think Columbus goes with Mason to start, and Mason actually had a decent finish to the season. I think if the Blue Jackets had acquired a veteran proven goalie then maybe that guy could have started for them, but Bobrovsky isn't really at that stage yet. Reimer Pro- Probably safest bet for opening day starter out of the whole bunch barring a trade. Safest bet for the largest workload, which may give him the potential to be the best of this bunch depending on how Toronto is this year as a team Con - Injuries, consistency issues, confidence. |

I actually see the new contract as a pro as a decent contract usually means a decent amount of starts. Edmonton WILL be better (can't be worse.....can they?) Furthermore, Khabibulin isn't much competition any more, especially if he gets back to his DUI ways.

I'd just like to add the Luongo possibility with Reimer. Till Luongo signs somewhere Reimer might be a risky pick. Not that he's not good but if Luo lands with TML, Reimer's value takes a hit.

Khabibulin is interesting, I know GotLaid had some stats showing that Khabi is significantly better in his contract years (which will be this coming season), so depending on if you put stock in those kind of stats, it will be interesting to see if he does turn up his game and if so, if the Oilers keep him to play the season out or if they trade him at the deadline. I don't think Luongo is willing to go to Toronto, so I'm not sure if he's really a factor here. Things could potentially change I suppose but I can't see him wanting to go to Toronto after the treatment he got in Vancouver lol. |

I'd stay away from Bob. Unless CLS does a complete turnaround then just about any goalie is going to get ventilated there, let alone a still developing young guy with potential confidence issues. On that note, it would be very interesting to see Steve Mason perform in a stable system behind a decent defence.

For what it's worth Bobrovsky is definitely the most athletic goalie of the bunch and probably the most talented. However, he's also the least refined.

I'd go:
Dub Optimus Reim Harding Bob Reim ahead of the other two b/c i see him starting. If not starting, he splits and pushes whomever and has the talent to steal the 1 back, if it comes to it. Harding will have more wins when he does play, thanks to thenew additions: Parise, Suter, Grandlund and Brodin. CBJ is just a mess. |
