Nineteen years in the bigs over 9300 AB's and a career .328 avg, good for 31st all time, statistically tied with Wade Boggs. Boggs was another good contact hitter that I got to watch.

Funny thing is in doing that research to see where Carew ranked in career BA I came across another name that I can't believe I left off, Tony "Mr. Padre" Gwynn. Even more impressive numbers, I mean off the chain numbers, when you look at this...

Career-

PA-10,232
AB- 9,288
AVG- .338

Here's the kicker...

SO- 434
BB- 790
IBB- 203

When you crunch that it breaks down as...

1 SO per every 21.4 AB's or 1 per every 23.58 PA's
2.29 BB for every SO

That is amazing stuff. I mean you've got guys now that are striking out over 200 times in a single season!! Gwynn only struck out 434 times over 20 years!! 20 years!!

It does pale in comparison to Ty Cobb's numbers in those same areas, but this is all about guys we've actually watched.

No mention of Tony Gwynn, really? I know he didn't hit for power but still. Career BA of near .340 isn't enough?

I didn't get to see him much (I'm only 22), but he was amazing.

His plate discipline was UNREAL. Maybe one of the best 3 post deadball era, that damned good.

I would have to say Robbie Alomar and Larry Walker..

But you really can't argue with anyone who says Tony Gwynn..
