Default Trading for youth

Hey guys,

After winning the 2010/2011 season my team took a bit of a step back last year and came 5th out of 10. I still scored the 2nd most points but was 1st in points against. I guess this can happen in head to head leagues...

My F's are getting a little old. Would you try to move any of the following? and if so what kind of return would you look to get? In our league is seems like anyone over 32 has little value but lots of players have good careers till they are 35 or so.

-Vinny
-Marleau
-Briere
-Hossa

Am I better off keeping them?

I would hold tight with that team. While some players are getting up there in age, you do have a bunch that just simply had down years (Ovie, Ryan, Stastny, Skinner, Subban, Green)

Plus the ones you listed are fully capable of having bounce back years at their age (Marleau included if he finds a new home). Heck Vinny was having a great year by his recent standards before his injury. And you also have the breakout potential of Holtby, Sven and Granlund.

F's-Ovie, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Hossa, Lecavalier, Ryan, Marleau, Briere, Selanne, Stastny, Voracek, Michalek, Skinner, Baertschi, Granlund, JVR, Franzen

D-Green, Byfuglien, Wideman, Streit, Burns, Subban, Murphy

G-Miller, Bryzgalov, Vokoun, Nabokov, Holtby, Hedberg

Id hang on to them as well. Its another story if these players were over 32 yrs and taking up a diminished role for their respective teams. But these guys are still primary scoring options. If Marleau is on the move out of SJ, id think he'd move to a contender that's looking for offensive output from him. Briere and Hossa are still offensive catalysts. Lecav battled injuries but still capable of 1c/2c. If you're not gonna get proper value right now, then just hang on to them until their market value goes up as the season progresses. Then, assess accordingly from there.

G'luck!

keep those four. people tend to throw guys away way before theyre out of gas. hossa and briere are still studs and if marleau moves his value will go up too. vinnt had a decent season minus the injury and should be a safe bet to repeat this years performance.

Obviously it all depends on what you're able to get in return for those guys. I'm not a big fan of any of them so I'd definitely shop them around to see what you could get for them. If you could get the types of Wheeler, Oshie, J.Staal, Perron etc. and a good pick/another upgrade, I'd pull the trigger. But if you can't get a solid return then just hold on to those guys.

i agree with this sentiment

one thing to keep in mind is that your leagues view of these players kinda matches yours so it shouldnt be surprising that they have limited value

you may have to pursue young vets instead of youth

if 32s have no value then some guys in your league might start getting nervous when guys hit 28

but you have to understand its difficult to fault guys for not wanting the players because they are 'old' when you dont want them because they are 'old'

I would definitely back up this statement. Make them available to a few guys. I wouldn't send out a mass email and make it look like you are desperate by any means. But I would target a few GM's who may have a few guys you would like to swap your guys for.. Do some research and work these GM's the next few month's.

If you could move Vinny and Briere for someone like Duchene who had an horrible season I'd do that in a heartbeat! Dreamers can dream right? :P

Thanks guys...

I am trying to get younger but I'm not going to let any of those guys go easy. I have already traded for Skinner and Ryan this off season. I'm sure I could get an Oshie, Perron, or Staal and a pick for any one of those but might just hold off for now.

Its the off season so GM's tend to over rate youth on their teams. Once the season starts and their young guys arent putting up numbers like they expected then I should shop them around again
