Default Help with keepers

Picking up my thread from August, I was able to parlay mauer (as a rental), bj ryan and dustin mcgowan into ian kinsler (injured)at our trade deadline.

The question is now, who do I keep? My league settings are in my sig and I have the following notable players with their 2009 salaries listed. I can keep up to 8 - salary cap of $312.

C - ianetta $10, napoli $10
1b - d.lee$29, votto $10
2b - kinsler $26, weeks$23, nix $10
3b - crede $10, dewitt $10
ss - a.cabrera$10, m.young $25
OF - hamilton $12,ankiel $10,giles $10,willingham $10
DH - thome $26
P - billingsley $14,gallardo $14,broxton$8,marmol$10,kershaw $10

I have broxton and hamilton under contract meaning that I must keep them or trade them for 2009. I can keep the rest for 2009 or 2009 + 2010(add 20% increase to salary)

I was thinking my keepers would be: kinsler (2009 only), votto(2009 +2010), hamilton, billingsley(2009), gallardo(2009), broxton, marmol(2009), kershaw(2009+2010).

But I thought that maybe I should trade ankiel $10 + gallardo $14 for a cheap position player.

Would R.Martin $13 be worth acquiring (or attainable) for ankiel + gallardo?

For 09 and 10 I would keep:

Hamilton (have to keep for 2 years)
Billingsly

For 09 I would keep:

Votto (could be talked into 10 also)
Kinsler
Marmol (could be talked into 10 also)
Kershaw (could be talked into 10 also)
Broxton
Napoli

As far as the trades, unless you include one of the 8 above, trades are limited since you can only protect 8. If you can get Martin, though, then I would protect Martin instead of Napoli. You can also try trading guys like Ankiel, Gallardo and Ianetta/Napoli for a real good SS or 3B and not protect Napoli.

Thanks for the help John - karma for you!

Just curious as to your decision regarding Napoli vs Gallardo.

I know there\'s positional scarcity at play and the fact that I probably will be keeping a bunch of Pitchers already, but is Napoli really worth keeping at $10?

Catchers either go for a lot in our league (Mauer was $22) or very little - so again,I was wondering if $10 would be a good value.

$10 is not great value for Napoli. Martin at $13 is definetly better. Napoli is the clear #8 on your list of 8 protects. If Gallardo is healthy, great. I have not read either way whether his knee is 100%. Until I know he is completely healthy, then I would not protect Gallardo at $14.

Anybody have some current info on Gallardo?

Protecting only 7 is another option that is not off the wall. You have some decent players after your top 7 and I think the best bet is to try packaging two of them for a SS or 3B.

Taking a quick look, I would go Kinsler, Hamilton, Votto, Billingsley, Broxton, Marmol, Kershaw, Gallardo

I am a big fan of Gallardo and he has done little to disappoint when healthy. By no means does his one injury stint tell me he is injury prone. I haven\'t heard anything negative since his appearance at the end of the season.

To me, your staff seems good to go. Very nice. I like the upside on both of your catcher but you can surely get one back later. Obviously focusing on 3B and SS is important to your success. I agree that Young isn\'t worth the money most likely.

I agree that getting a top SS in a deal like that would be ideal. If possible, then do it.

R. Martin is a little overrated but might be worth that deal you mentioned.

I could be talked into protecting Gallardo but I would like to get news that his knee is 100%. I have not seen any offseason news on the knee. That in itself might be a good sign since it might no longer be an issue. I just don\'t know.

Any concrete news Jacob?

Well, one thing we can use to gauge this decision is the WBC. If he plays or even when he agrees to play, we will know he must be fine.

I really see no reason to worry. His ace ability is worth the risk to me.

If Gallardo is serious about playing the WBC and ge gets clearance, then it is obviuosly a good sign.

I am caught between having my players play in the WBC. On the one hand, if they are playing, then it is a good indication that they are probably going into the season healthy. But the toll on the body playing menaingful games in March is certainly a negative.
