I've become a big believer in Mike Smith.....everyone says he's a system goalie, but whenever I watch Phoenix play I see 35+ shots against and at least 5 odd-man rushes seemingly every game. He was lights god damn out against Chicago and that was definitely not a "system" win that was Smith stealing a series.

He's big, he's athletic, and he finally has the confidence of a starting goalie. I completely believe he'll be a top goalie for a long time.

Put Brodeur or roy on a lousy and defensive team and see what happens.

The thing about tippetts syatem is its designed to limit the quality chances by the other team. At the same time though the goalie has to come up big at times. This is exactly what happens with mike Smith. Big & Key saves

Thats what proves hes a top goalie.

exactly, its the 'bend don't break' model...you lack the true shutdown ability so instead you focus on getting all 5 of your skaters playing team defense and minimizing the quality of chances...force more perimeter shots, or force them to sharper angles, let the goalie see the pucks and clear the rebounds immediately

I understand the system. But it is not like it does not influence a goalies numbers. Look no further than Bryzgalov. His only good seasons were under Tippett. In PHI, he's awful. So a mediocre goalie can certainly look a lot better in a particular system. It was enough to fool PHI management to pay him an insane amount of money.

Remind me what your situation is with Smith? Are you debating keeping him over someone?

My situation is I have have 3 goalies in a league where goalies are very valuable.

Quick
Smith
Ward

Cats are SV, GAA, SV%, W, and SO.

Keeping Quick for sure. Thinking of flipping either Smith or Ward for a forward. Just trying to figure out which one.

I love Smith and plan on keeping him in my late round keeper league (thank you Mr Tippett) but I would keep Ward and try to flip Smith. Ward is younger and now has a more defensive minded coach so his #'s should increase. He is a buy low canidate right now so I'm not sure you would get full value from him.

This is a perfect explanation of what you should be doing.

I personally think Smith is the best "sell high" candidate I've ever seen.
Phoenix is not a very good hockey team. They have alot of guys overachieving, including Smith, and that kind blueprint simply has a very short shelf life.
They remind me a lot of Montreal a couple years ago when they made their final four appearance. I kept saying (and got slammed many times for saying it) that this was simply not a very good hockey team. But they rode a hot goalie and a few underachievers to a semi final appearance. The evidence was not even that hard to see... constantly being (heavily) outshot and playing very few minutes in the attacking zone. You can't get away with that forever.
Guys like McGoo hated my guts and spouted cliches like "great team effort" (yadda yadda yadda)... but then Philly destroyed them and the Habs have been declining rapidly ever since. Because, I would argue, they weren't good enough to be in the final four anyway.

Anyway, small tangent there...
But the point is that I think Phoenix follows a similar path next season. They will be a bottom 10 team over the next 3 years, and I wouldn't bank on Tippett being around much longer either. Coaches have a relatively short shelf life. Tippett and Burke are huge reasons for the confidence restoration in Smith this season. And I don't think you can count on those coaches being around too much longer.

Smith also doesn't have the cleanest medical file, does he?

And didn't Angus call him the worst goalie in the league last year (maybe not word for word, but I think that is pretty close to what he said).
