Default Mike Smith: Flash-in-the-Pan or Real Deal?

What are people's opinions on Mike Smith, long term?

Are his numbers this year (38 wins, .930 SV%, 2.21 GAA, 8 SOs) an anomaly, or can we expect more of the same (if a little reduced across the board) next year and beyond? The health thing has always concerned me, but he's looked great this year, and Tippet's system obviously helps insulate him even more.

Details of my league are in my signature. Basically, 60 players are kept, with every GM keeping at least 1 goalie (and sometimes 2 or even 3; 17 goalies, for instance, were kept last year). My sure-fire keepers are Backstrom, Parise, Kane, Karlsson, and Luongo, with Keith, Hartnell, and Yandle all being on the bubble. I have a deal to bring in Datsyuk, too, and know I could use him to get Smith+.

If I can get Smith with some of those peripheral parts (I can't keep them all!), does it make sense to do so? Is Smith a legitimate keeper in my league?

Rep for help / opinions!

Originally a solid prospecty in Stars org.
Ran into injuries & lousy defence in TBay.
Playing in a great system now under one of the best coaches in the NHL.

Hope that answers your question

How many teams in your league?

10 teams, 6 keepers per. Goalies are a bit of a hot commodity (e.g., 17 goalies were kept for the start of the 2011-12 season).

Full team & league details in my signature.

Confidence can be everything for a goalie and this guy just oozed confidence all year. Sparrow is right in that he had crummy defence in front of him in pretty well everywhere he played in his career. The teams were not defense first and were more run-and-gun and left him out to dry alot. Coyotes are a young team, but are defense first and have some solid prospects and up and comers (mixed in nicely with some vets) that make them tough to beat. I acquired Smith in a trade this year in my keeper because I think he can keep this up next year and beyond.

Yes, go and scoop him up. He's an excellent goaltender in a system that absolutely plays to his strengths. He will be a top 10 goalie for years to come.

Good system and good " team" defense in front of him. He'll fine in the " system" beyond this year. He's always been a quality goalie. Just gets nicked up with injuries from time to time and had some lousy defenses in front of him in the past.

I dont know that i keep Smith over Schneider though. How long do you have to decide? if Schneider gets a #1 gig on a solid team in off season - mightbe somthg to think about.

Keepers lock in in early September. Lots of time.

That begs the question if Schneider is more of a keeper than, say, Keith or Yandle, though.

Well you did say Goalies were a hot commodity when it came to teams keeping them.

I should have qualified that with "good, starting goalies are a hot commodity." 17 were kept last year. All were goalies who 1) were clear-cut starters, and 2) could be reasonably expected to perform decently the next year -- with the only head-scratcher, from my perspective, being Roloson and maybe Brodeur.
