How I Won It All
BRAG POST!!!! Thanks to all the advice, help and counsel of the members of this site I was able to take down the regular season and playoffs of my 12 team one year head-2-head league.
And to pump my own tires, here's how I did it:
Draft: Had the 9th overall pick and Malkin fell that far, amazing steal. Kovalchuk in the 2nd round was also a steal. Marleau in the 3rd was an OK pick, Kesler in the 4th was bad. Neal in the 6th round was another steal. Fleischmann, Weisse in the later rounds were great. Price and Crawford were not as great as I hoped but were solid throughout the year. I also drafted Moulson and Versteeg, too bad I dropped them before they became amazing.
I made one big trade about 2 months into the season: I moved Neal, Hemsky and Visnovsky for Ryan, Parise, and Wisnewski. Hemsky, Visnovsky and Wiz all ended up on the wire. I thought I was selling high on Neal but it turns out he was a stud, getting Parise and Ryan was decent value and I think the trade was a slight win for me.
My team was in 1st or 2nd for the entire year, the last 3 weeks of the regular season I had big victories of 8-2-2, 11-0-1 and 7-3-2 to lock up the President's Trophy.
Skip ahead to the Playoffs: 8 teams make it, 1 round per week. In the first week I absolutely destroyed my opponent with 26Gs, 26A to his 4G and 15A I ended up winning 9-1-2.
Round 2: much tougher opponent, the guy had the 2nd best regular season record but got the 4th seed by being in my division. He had Fleury and Miller in net which I figured meant I'd need to sweep the skater stats. Luckily the 2 goalies imploded for a stat line of 0W, 4.77 GAA and .821 SV% I combined that with wins in G, +/-, PPP and a single shortie. I carried the week with a 7-5-0.
In the finals I played the guy with Stamkos, which was a huge schedule edge, he also had Quick and Anderson in net. To make matters worse I burned both my moves adding Blues before it was announced that Price was out for the week. He took a big lead with Stamkosí 2 goal game and Quickís shutout vs. the Oilers. I was down as much as 9-2-1. My team played well and battled back and went into Saturday down 7-5-0.
Saturday I had a great start. Early on Dupuis had a goal and Malkin had a goal and an assist, too bad Philly couldnít have made it closer to get me a GWG. Crawford took a shutout into the 3rd vs. the Red Wings, had he held it I would have been almost unbeatable in goalie stats. Unfortunately the Red Wings came back to tie it, Crawford won in a shootout giving him #s of 1.85 and .938. I needed the Devils to put up at least 3 goals vs. Anderson so that heíd be forced to start Quick, the Devils score 3 and Kovy added a big empty net goal with Parise getting a single assist. Also Ryan, who I traded for, put up 2 goals in a meaningless game vs. Calgary, that was huge for me. Going into the final 2 games of the night I needed one of 3 things for a victory:
Kesler, Marleau, Hamhuis or Boyle to score a single goal; OR
Quick to give up 2 or more goals; OR
the Sharks to beat the Kings.
It didnít look good early, the Canucks dominated the Oilers but Kesler and Hamhuis didnít manage a goal. Meanwhile the Kings looked in total control up 2-0 going into the 3rd vs. the Sharks. Then the miraculous 3rd period happened! The Sharks scored the 1st minute into the 3rd, there was hope. Then, the Sharks got a powerplay and BAM Marleau scores on the powerplay! I take over goals, and the goalie stats, and its over! For good measure the Sharks added a 3rd goal in overtime. At the end of the night I sat up 7-3-2 and hoisted the silver trophy for the first time in my fantasy history, while becoming the only manager to ever win the Division, Presidentís Trophy and Playoffs in the same year.
So thatís my story if youíve read all of this congratulations to you and thanks again for all the help Dobberworld.
