What's are some thoughts for this guy moving forward?
How has Hitch been using him? Is he not liked or under-utilized? Is he going to be a checker moving forward? any info would be appreciated.

Stewart has probably been one of the most discussed players on the Dobber forwards forums over the last two years.
If you go to Search/Advanced Search and type in Stewart in the "Titles" box, you can probably get a lot of opinions. There are those that like him and those that don't. I don't like him. I think he clicked with Paul Stastny and a lot of people just decided THAT Stewart would score every year regardless of who or where he played. He's OK, a 2nd/3rd line winger who should give you 40-60pts. I don't think he'll ever produce above 60pts unless he finds his way onto a team's 1st line with a very skilled center. Odds of that happening are low. I'd draft him expecting 50pts next year. |

If he can find his way back to Andy McDonalds side, and if McDonald can stay healthy, then I think Stewart will do quite will in St Louis. That being said, he is about to become a RFA at seasons end. Not sure what St Louis has in plans for him. He is only 24 and has the ability to become a premier power forward in the league.

i think stewart has the skills to be a point-producing, power forward - but only in the right system. it will never happen in STL - not even if he gets a shot on a top line (which he won't). The blues play a quick transiton game that just doesn't fit his skill set. stewie excells in a wide open offensive minded game like he had in Colorado playing with Statsny. When he can build speed coming down the wing he is nasty. But in the transition based game, he struggles. The blues create a ton of turnovers, especially in the offensive zone, and he just doesn't have the quick decision making or hockey sense for this stlyle of game. After his short stint with the blues last year, I was convinced that this guy was going to be an offensive stud for the blues going forward, but I am convinced now that he will never put up points or get a solid chance in an offensive roll in their system (square peg / round hole). And with younger, better offensive players in the pipeline - Stewie is a 3rd liner or trade bait on this team going forward.

He has clicked with Stastny and with McDonald and with Berglund. If he plays top 6 minutes with a good playmaking centre, he can put up 30-35 goals possibly up to 70-75 pts, but more likely 60-65 pts is what we can expect even if he gets the centre he needs and the ice time he needs. That said, he won't get either of those things in St. Louis and he needs to be traded or he will not reach his potential. Hitch doesn't seem to like him, or he prefers playing him in a checking role, and next year the top 6 will only be more crowded in St. Louis. Also, because the team is doing so well with Stewart not getting top 6 minutes, I don't see anything changing for him on that team.
I do believe he will be traded. He is getting paid too much for a bottom six role and I believe teams will be interested in him. I think he will be moved this summer.

I for one invested heavily in him this year, drafting him before even Spezza and Karlssom, as I though he should be good for a 35-35 season. That unfortunately didn't pan out and I think that's been due to both the system and the lack of opportunity on the incredibly well built blues club.
I agree with most of the above posts and I do think that he will excel if traded to a team that gives him the opportunities he got while flourishing in col. The key problem with power forwards in general is that they need to score, otherwise their ice time gets dramatically slashed. He doesn't have the speed and awareness to be a factor in setting up great opportunities but as was written above, paired with a good centre he's got a bright future...but whether or not hell be traded and given that opportunity is anyone's guess
