I'm really surprised how many people have Carlson in their top 10. I just don't see it, yet. I know he has potential, but to put him ahead of players already putting up decent points seems unjust. Nothing against Carlson...I just don't think he is a top 10 guy at this point.

I think subban could be on this list considering his stellar peripherals. I'd have him
Over Carlson and even Keith. Probably even shattenkirk a well. I'd actually even draft him before Edler and I love Edler.

With the lack of subban mentions a strike to move that subban is a serious buy-low in keeper leagues!

True that...I wouldn't put him top 10 yet, but he is definately a buy-low candidate.

I have ragged about how I hate defensemen in my Cage Match articles many times. The problem with defensemen is they rely so much on their teammates, systems and just plain luck to put up points. Also, because they score much less than forwards their final totals are much more subject to these ups and downs. A player could miss 10 games and those could have been the 10 games where they’d have gotten the bounces to score 10 points and that could cost them 20-25% of their scoring for the season. That’s the difference between being on your roster and being on the waiver wire.

Consider the fact that since the lockout there have been 29 different players to score top 10 in defensemen scoring and 68 who have cleared 40 points. How do you balance that sort of year to year turnover?

For these reasons I have to commend Angus for putting together this list in particular because it has to be damn near impossible to balance everything. I will make a couple of points though.

Lidstrom is the only player to score in the top 10 defensemen every year since the lockout. Won’t do it this year but only because of injury. He was an HM last year but didn’t even get that the year before. Let’s assume he can hang on for two more seasons. Definitely deserves an HM until he announces his retirement and maybe you just stick him in the top 10 since he is a decent bet to be there until he hangs them up.

Boyle and Streit belong in the top 10. Unless you see them falling off in the next couple years then pencil them in. I get that they are old but every healthy season since the lockout that they have been in the league they have been top 10 in defensemen scoring.
That dependability is indispensable. They are sources of stability in an unstable world.

Where does Chara's dependability rate? This is only his second season where he’s been top 10 in defensemen scoring but he hasn’t scored less than 43 points in a season since the lockout and obviously he brings the peripherals. I have him top 10.

What do you do with Campbell and Visnovsky? They can either be a top 10 defenseman or fail to even break 40 points. I think it is way too easy to react to what they have done in this past season. You could say the same about Mike Green.

What do you do with Doughty and Keith? Both have shown flashes of top 10 talent but have fallen way off.

Enstrom in spite of his injury has scored at a 50-point pace for the third straight season.

This will be the first healthy season Kaberle fails to hit 40 points since the lockout and just the second healthy season he fails to score in the top 10.

With these things said, here is my top 10 based on the 2-3 year window.

Karlsson
Letang
Pietrangelo
Byfuglien
Weber
Chara
Boyle
Streit
Enstrom
Edler

HM
Doughty
Keith
Yandle
Green
Visnovsky
Campbell
Lidstrom
Kaberle
Shattenkirk
Subban

I totally get what you are saying, but it is EXTREMELY bold to have the players I bolded outside the top 10. This is a tough list to make for sure. But truth is that if this is a list of fantasy value, I can't see many people not willing to draft Doughty (for example) higher than Streit, Chara, Boyle, Enstrom, and Edler, at least.

Yeah, I hear that but the keeper league fallacy is thinking about your team from a 10+ year stretch rather than trying to win in 2-3 years. Angus' criteria is 2-3 years so if you want to win in that window then you want Streit, Chara, Boyle, Enstrom and Edler because they'll be more productive in that stretch. So context is key.

And I am a believer in guys like Yandle and Doughty (Keith not so much) I'm just not sure you can rely on them. Take one of them over a Chara and I'd wager you look smart in one of the next three years but Chara is the consistent pick over the three years.

MD - dig your analysis in this thread. More in line with my thinking. Defensemen, especially, fluctuate so much from year to year. Consistency is an underrated attribute.
