It was Hockey Day in Canada and Mats Sundin night in Toronto, which apparently did not inspire the Leafs in the least. Let's look at what went down last night.
Bizarre Stat of the Night Columbus was out shot 15-1 in the third period of their 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. STUDS Malk-in Cookies There is not much to say about Evgeni Malkin that hasn't already been said. The man was just unreal again on Saturday putting up five points in the Penguins 8-5 victory over the Jets. He wasn't alone though as Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang posted four and three points respectively. I don't think there is another team in professional sports that could lose the best player in the game and just keep on rolling. Not so lone Ranger Much like the Penguins, the Rangers had some big performances as well. Ryan Callahan had three goals and seven shots, Brad Richards added three assists, and Marian Gaborik had four points in a 5-2 beat down of the Philadelphia Flyers. The Price is Right Carey Price was as good as the Maple Leafs were bad. He made 32 saves for the shutout in a game that looked like Toronto wouldn't have scored if they played twelve periods entirely on the power play. Honourable Mention Evgeni Nabokov Comeback player of the year anyone? Nabokov stopped 34 of 35 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Kings. Steve Mason Mason also stopped 34 of 35 shots in a Blue Jackets victory, which are becoming almost as rare as a solar eclipse. Shawn Horcoff He was the best Oiler on the ice and finished with three points and a plus-2. Horcoff also set up the winner in overtime by Taylor Hall. Alexei Emelin Emelin posted a nine hit game against Leafs. I know I can't believe it either. David Perron The Blues left winger had two goals and a helper in a 3-2 victory over Colorado. Mike Smith Smith had a 38 save shutout against the high-powered Blackhawks. Milestones Milan Hejduk played in his 967th game for the Avalanche, tying him with Adam Foote for second all-time. DUDS Dethroned The Kings just can't score. Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards, and Drew Doughty were all held pointless in a 2-1 loss to the lowly New York Islanders. They have only scored more than one goal three times in their last eight contests. Unbeleafable The Leafs were shutout and only three players finished without a minus rating. Montreal scored five goals on just 18 shots, and Toronto was 0-5 with the man advantage. Montreal also out hit the Leafs 36-25 and they blocked 21 Leaf shots. Goaltending, or lack there of There were some poor goaltending performances league wide Saturday night. James Reimer gave up four goals on 15 shots; Ondrej Pavelec gave up a touchdown and a two-point conversion, Marc-Andre Fleury had a .800 save percentage, and Sergei Bobrovsky conceded five goals on 26 shots. Dishonourable Mention Dustin Byfuglien You know you had a rough day defensively when you had two points and still finished minus-3. Cal O’Reilly Somehow finished as a minus-2 without a shot even though the Penguins put up eight goals. |
