Default New Hockey Blog - shameless self-promotion

Guys,

I promise I will only do this the one time, but I am looking for feedback on some fantasy hockey writing I have been doing. What do you think?

http://tinyurl.com/7lh3fdw

and my most recent post on when to cut bait on a fantasy centre

http://preview.tinyurl.com/7lh3fdw

Thanks,

Matt

Hey man- I checked it out and I know new sites always love feedback so heres mine:

The Good: I read the article about cutting bait on centers and I thought it was very compelling data. It certainly goes against the common adage that a player is in their prime between 28-33. I also liked one part of the sites concept whcih- is to provide data unimpeded by personal bias and gut feelings. This idea could be fleshed out in a pretty neat/interactive way if you responded to e-mails/questions with this tone in mind. Its a neat way to look at articles and I see by the other topics theres a lot of material to be mined with that outlook.

The Bad: Unless Im missing something it looks like you just have a link to your articles posted basically one after the other. Itd be nice if the site was organized in a way that you could see links to the last 5 (or however many you want) articles seperately, right on the homepage. Also the graphic in the background (church) and transparent interface of lots of the panels is distracting. Poolies will come to the site for data and its counter intuitive that we're staring at a narrow column of words in the middle of our screen (and constantly scrolling to down to boot) when theres so much space being unused.

The Ugly: I know you are going for branding and putting a spin on things but- my god- the puns and the religious overtone are BRUTAL! Like I said I liked the article and the data but I seriously considered navigating away after every terrible pun. When I scrolled down and saw that every article began with "Fantasy Flock, Let us play" and was riddled with "Altar of addition" puns- I actually did. I am not offended by this imagery but I found it extremely grating how often the metaphor was beaten over my head when it wasnt something I found appealing to begin with. I hope this isnt chalked up to me being sensitive about religion because honestly it would apply to any branding device. If your cite was called "The Hockey Hogtie" and every article was crammed full of rodeo references Id have the same response (nausea). In terms of religion specifically though- I also noted that you essentially apologize twice- in the disclaimer and your bio- noting that you have no intent of offending anyone. All Im saying is that if Ive read two apologies before Ive read an article- chances are the theme could be constructively tweaked.

So thats it- hopefully this is seen as constructive criticism and not just a flame post. Good data and if the number of puns were pulled back a bit and the remaining ones added something witty/funny/interesting rather than divert back to your branding theme all the time- I think youd have a solid basis of well written articles. Id turf the religious theme too but thats just me.

Good Luck!

Default Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. It is much appreciated. I will probably tone down the number religious puns as I go along. I may even perhaps eliminate it all together at some point. I have just been looking for a way to share data that doesn't feel copy and pasted from another blog on the web. Perhaps that isn't it. I do home the data is helpful and that my message of thinking long and hard about why a GM is making a move or isn't making a move resonates.

Thanks again,

Matt

I would suggest adding jump breaks to each article after the intro.

I think this one may be more palatable. Stuck with the "religious" theme for the time being.
