Well the Vos didn't last long so I ordered something totally off the beaten path....

Schlenkerla Marzan. Never heard of it. Big smoked hops flavor, dark, but not heavy like a stout. In fact, thinner then any porter I've had.

Different. I can see where you either love it or hate it.

From that list I'd recommend the Franziskaner and Anchor Steam. In the Franziskaner look for either the Hefe-Weisse or Hefe-Weisse Dunkel. Anchor Steam is nothing spectacular but it is a good beer nonetheless.

Funny thing, I offered my own take on Anchor Steam, then checked BA, and well they're much higher on it than I am. Still I'd recommend it, even if it didn't do as much for me as it did for them. Who knows your opinion may be closer to their's and you will have a new favorite.

That Schlenkerla Marzan wouldn't by chance be this one....

If so it's a fairly uncommon style, at least in my experience, but one I quite enjoy called a Rauchbier. Here's the definition of the style from BA...

Quote:
The Rauchbier style is an old German beer style, its origins go back to the 1500's and to the district of Franconia and the town of Bamberg. It's typically of dark colour and has similarities of the Oktoberfestbier. Green malts are literally dried over an open fire of beech wood, imparting a unique smokiness ("rauch" is German for smoke), the usage of which produces beers of an acquired taste. Imagine a smokiness so robust, so assertive, that it tastes of spiced, smoked meat.
I've tried one from Fort Collins Brewing called Z Lager, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Might have to look around and see if that Schlenkerla is available hereabouts.

Anchor Stam is fairly good. It's not the best, but it's quite solid for a drink at any event.

I owe you for that one. Very nice beer. Much better than the ash tray I drank beforehand.
