Thanks Spitball, I'll check those out. I may start a new thing, every time I go for a restock on beer pickup a bottle of Scotch or Irish whiskey as well. On the nights when I don't have to work and can have drinks, add a glass of whiskey to the menu. That's certainly something to consider.

As for the Stone Smoked Porters, I've only tried the standard smoked. Haven't seen any of the variations, vanilla and chipotle, but since they're Stone brews I'd give 'em a go without any recommendations.

a great intro into the single malt world; highland park. looking for a super peaty/smokey mix, laphroaig should be on your radar. like it a bit easier on the palette? aberlour has a young malt finished in sherry casks.

at present, i am sipping a dog fish head chicory stout. thanks for the rec. fine beer. have another stone smoked porter lined up for later. one of my favs that i can't get at home. anyone tried the stone smoked porter/ vanilla brew? i'll pick up half a dozen of those on way home and review.

go hawks!!! erp.
Yeah good calls on those single malts. The range in flavor varies greatly, I have foundover the years. The Lagavulin is a tad ashy for me. I like 'em a bit mellow on the smoke, and heavy on the honey...well, not too heavy.

Blended I'll only have Chevis or JW Black. Singles I like Oban, Cragganmore. Dalwhinnie is another highland...tad more smokey than the Oban and Cragganmore, but not over the top either (imo).

Standard singles include Glenkinchie, Glenlivet. Start there and proceed as your taste buds dictate. There's serious range in the singles so me telling you which to pick is like trying to say Ommegang is better than Unibroue.

I'd like to hear some of your Scotch recommendations too. I'm sure some of the whiskey drinkers who drop by this thread can contribute to the Irish Whiskey recommendations.
Having a Three Phils and man....I could drink Ommegang for the rest of my life and never lose this smile. Helluva a quad.

Gonna move on to Westmalle Tripel, and grill some polish sausgage with a splash of horseradish mustard.

Heh-heh....love when the wife's not home...

Just got back from the supermarket. I was there picking up some bier sticks for Santa as well. He's in for a bit of a treat tonight.

Merry Christmas to you as well. Certainly not beach weather here, but balmier than it is for my brethren up north. Little Founders Red's Rye action so far, plus lots of egg nog, and four fingers of Clontarf neat. Not drunk or buzzed but feeling very toasty at the moment.

Looking to start hitting the beers a little later, just letting the more spirituous beverages wear off a bit. Probably crack open the Sam Adams Thirteenth Hour Stout, some Abita Turbodog, and even some Blvd Sixth Glass Quad.

Hopefully the rest of you are having as much fun with friends and family as I am.

So today was a good day. I drank about 24 ounces of Paulaner's Ocktoberfest Wiesen, which I think is like a white Ocktoberfest (really smooth and light, but still 6%).

Then, I got to take home a 6 pack of Lagunitas Little Sumptin' Ale, a Censored Ale by them as well.

The icing on the cake was a Half growler (half gallon) of Rogue's Yellow Snow IPA. I haven't had it before, but I'm sure I'll love it by the end no matter how it tastes at the start.
