Yay for Mel Brooks and Beer. I think someone should make a brewery that names beers after Mel Brooks characters and phrases. Would be an epic craft brewery name. Though not sure what the rights are to those names and phrases.

I'm just going from experience, but you have some solid scientific rebuttals going on there! There have been many times that I've put beer back in the fridge. It never tastes as good. Opened a 500ml can late at night and fell asleep on the couch with it in my hand... Wake up and put it back the fridge for tomorrow. Common scenario back in the day. hahah

Just got back from another re-stocking. Pretty good haul, a few old favorites, some new ones, and one huge gamble.....
The old favorites: Blvd Dark Truth (I know, shocking) Blvd Sixth Glass Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat Abita Jockamo IPA The Rookies: Abita Turbodog Fuller's London Porter Green Flash Double Stout Rogue Yellow Snow Rogue Santa's Private Reserve Avery White Rascal Mendocino Oatmeal Stout Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout Sam Adams Thirteenth Hour Sam Adams New World Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest The Huge Gamble: From the very first time I saw this on their website I knew I had to at least try it once. This one is going to be either a love it or hate it beer, and I'm hoping since it contains two of my most favorite flavors it will be the former. I've stalled long enough to build the suspense. The huge gamble is..... Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale I figure I'm only out one bottle if it misses, so why not gamble. Anyway, I've been up nearly 24 hours so I'm headed out for some rack time.

That is a big haul. Something like that would cost me a lot of money. It would probably average out at about $6 for a 330ml bottle.

My mouth was fairly watering right there in front of the cooler once I saw it. If it's as good as I think it will be, I'll have to add that to my list of recommended porters for Bomm. Honestly I think it would be safe to add it, but I want to be thorough and actually taste it first. It's currently sitting at number 2 on the playlist. First up I'm dying to try that weird Bacon Maple Ale. Never I have I had this strange mix of anticipation and dread simultaneously when confronted with a beer. Then again when the hell would one expect to encounter such a thing as that....in beer form no less. Pray for me.....

I felt a little jealous after NWO's post, so I went to the beer store! Picked up the following:
Yakima Scarlet by Liberty Brewing ($9.99 500ml): Its a new one. Haven't heard of it before, but its local and I try to taste all the local beers. By local, I mean NZ. This is basically all I could dig up about it. http://www.regionalwines.co.nz/beer....-scarlet-500ml Double Trouble by Tuatara ($12.99 650ml) http://tuatarabrewing.co.nz/range/double-trouble/ The label is old skool 3-D and it comes with the glasses to see it! hahaha Here's a bit about the beer: Pacific Jade to bitter (70 IBU up front), then Pacific Jade, Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe, and Zythos late in the boil for Flavour and aroma. Then Nelson Sauvin for the first dry-hop, and Simcoe and Zythos for the second dry-hop. Calculated at 167 IBU. Galaxy IPA by Croucher Brewing ($10.99 500ml) GALAXY IPA is a highly hopped India Pale Ale, it is a showcase of the Australian Galaxy hop. Released 2012. Tasting Notes: Appearance - a light golden coloured ale, with a frothy white head. Aroma - Pineapple… big time! The trademaek flavour and aroma of galaxy is Pineapple. Weihenstephan Weizen yeast delivers the aroma and flavour of this very special beer. Banana and clove leaps out of this classic Bavarian style - underlined with a vanilla and a scrumptious biscuity malt character. Body & Mouthfeel - There is enough malt sweetness to carry the massive hop load, with a significant bitter finish to slap you about the cheeks and tempt you toward another!

Well I tried that Bacon Maple Ale from Rogue with dinner(sorta), and I rather liked it. No way I'd want it everyday, heck I wouldn't even want it more than once a year, but for what it is, a novelty beer, it was very good. A few things to bear in mind if you decide to give it a go. First up, as you would expect, it's very very sweet. Rogue recommends doughnuts as a food pairing, but I would preach caution with that. A lot depends on your stomach's tolerance for sweets, and just how much of that bottle your going to be downing. That brings us to the second consideration. It's only available in a 750ml bottle, so that factors heavily into how to approach this one. It's not very alcoholic, just under 6%, so that's not really going to cause problems even if you knock back the whole bottle solo. It's back to point #1, that sweetness. Price is the third point to consider. That bottle set me back almost $12(US), for a novelty beer. At that price I wanted to make sure I gave the beer every chance to win me over. Given that it's such a weird flavor combo I had to use a bit of psychology to get my brain wrapped around this. My thinking was the brain associates maple with breakfast, but since it's so sweet I wanted to pair it with salty and savory foods. So I whipped up one of my favorite meaty breakfast dishes, a hashbrown, sausage, egg, and cheese skillet scramble. That was the perfect contrast to the beer. Now that I got all that out there on to the beer itself. Goes without saying, but you've never encountered anything like it in a beer. That's the elephant in the room. Forget balance among the flavors. It's maple heavy in the nose and in the mouth, with some smokiness from the bacon underlying that. Rogue lists the IBU on it at ~30. I don't know about that, I mean there's really no hop to speak of, at least that my palate could detect. In that regard it has a Maudite or Trois Pistoles vibe, malty and sweet, with a faint trace of hops. The smoke flavor is good, nothing heavy handed, and while not balanced in comparison to the sweet, it works well overall. Medium body with decent carbonation finishes it off. I liked it overall, and at some point down the road I would entertain the idea of getting another bottle, but not anyway soon. If you want to roll the dice on a novelty I'd recommend this one. To sum it all up in three words...Delicious liquid lunacy.

I'm having an existential crisis here. One of my undeniable truths of life has long been that Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter is the finest example of the style to be found anywhere on earth. All others fell short of the glory that is the God of Porters, Samuel Smith's.
Now that I've had my first taste of Fuller's London, I'm facing a crisis. There actually exists a porter that is at least the equal of Taddy Porter. It stands my beer world on it's head, spins it off it's axis, my mind blown. I feel as if I'm blaspheming by typing those words, and yet the truth is in the glass before me. Maybe I should take a page from the ancient Romans and have multiple beer Gods.

I'd be willing to bet there are better porters out there waiting to be discovered. In fact it is a motto I live by. I refuse to believe that what I have now is the best. There is better out there somewhere. Its the journey to find better that is important, not the destination.
