I was well aware of the job opportunities and such. My issue is I spent time in two different fields (Business and Sociology) and literally didn't learn a thing I couldn't have learned from spending maybe 10 hours on wikipedia.

And to make it worse, I found university really messed with my attention span - ie: I got skimming and focusing on specific pieces of information down to such a fine art that it's just become second-nature to only pay partial attention to a given task.

I think the style of learning really needs to change in today's society. This rote learning system of memorization and multiple choice testing is literally good for nothing.

NWO, I think the best way to start on that path would be to take all the free learning options first. There is so much to learn about brewing and I believe the best way to begin that learning is a bit of trial and error. There are brewmaster courses down here that are only about a thousand bucks. Its a 3 day course. I was gonna take it, but I figured most of it would be over my head anyway as I dont understand the basics yet.

Homebrewtalk.com is a great place to start learning and asking questions. The threads that are already there are a great source of info.

Anyways, good luck on your new path NWO. The world always needs more good beer.

Like you I've been looking to do more homebrewing, in my case as much for the understanding of the brewing process as much as making my own beer. I'm still using the primitive method, malt extracts and a simple jug as a
fermenter. Hey it was a gift and it scratched the itch to brew while I research the more traditional and complex setups.

Right now pretty much the only thing stopping me from just trying get a job with a brewery and gain knowledge from a hands on approach is being tied down with this house and very, very limited opportunities to do so in this area. But I remain undaunted and I will succeed at this, once I can get out from under this albatross.

SO excited! Found Dogfish Head's My Antonia in the local liquor store. $16.99 was a hefty price to pay, but I'm sure it'll be totally worth it. Love their product.

I've never seen or tried Dogfish head stuff. I only have heard of it because of that documentary Beer Wars. Great doc by the way.

Ive only had the 90 minute IPA from Dogfish Head. Didn't really like either. Well... didn't like it is prolly a bit harsh. It wasn't what I was expected is more accurate. Was expecting big, bright IPA flavor with hops all up in your grill. What I got was a Belgian style IPA.

Oh it wasn't terrible beer by any means. I'm really nit picking. They are a great beer producer.

I visited the winner of the best beer vendor in Auckland for the last three years running tonight. Its downtown (and a supermarket!) which makes it really inconvenient to nip into. I made the effort tonight and it was quite impressive for a supermarket. I felt the need to take a picture of the wall of beer they had. Great stuff. I restrained myself and picked up one Rochefort 6 and a local beer (Hallertau Stuntman). I'll go back there tho.

Gotta love how this thread keeps going strong.

It's our last night in Seattle for the hockey tourney. Sampled a few more brews from south of the border:

Anchor Liberty Ale - classic dry hopped ale from one of The states oldest micro brews

Lagunitas Day Time IPA- typical Lagunitas hop smell and taste, but only 4.6 %. Nice from the 7% and over ABV you expect from most good IPA's.

Sierra Nevada Tumbler- a brown ale....just not my style...anything with even a hint of smoke taste and I'll avoid in the future. Solid if that's your style though.

Looking fwd to a few more samples tonight. What's everyone else drinking this Sat?
