Theres a guy in my league who is D heavy and is thinking of shopping Orlov for Fwd help. I am tempted to go after him but I am worried about the timeline for Orlov before he will be given a fair shake. I am worried about the depth in front of Orlov in Washington. Green, Carlson, Alzner, Wideman. Where does Orlov fit in? Is he 3 years away from even producing? I hear about his potential and I know he oozes it, but when will he get the chance to show it? I am not in a rebuild mode and will make the playoffs in my keeper league (i am mid pack right now and have made a few good deals lately that will help me going forward this year and for the next few) but is it worth giving up a good starting fwd for him? What does every one think of him for the next couple years?

My read on Orlov is that he has the potential to be the new Mike Green in Washington. That said, he has the current Mike Green in his way, as well as Carlson and Wideman. It's quite possible that Green or Wideman will be leaving Washington in the next year, which will give Orlov the chance he needs to get some real PP ice time.
So far this year he has shown to be a solid player, and in fact many Washington fans have described him as the best player on the ice on more than one occasion, not just offensively, but in his own end as well. That speak volumes as to the potential of a very young D-man. There's a small chance he will earn more ice time regardless of who is available, but what he really needs to shine is for one of the 3 offensive D-men ahead of him on the depth chart to be shipped out.

He's an offensively-gifted defensemen. Those don't grow on trees. Even if Green is in the mix with Carlson in front of him, he'll still get PP2. He's producing now, which bodes well. The best comparison i've seen for him is Markov as opposed to another Green, who will be a RFA this upcoming year, Carlson too, if memory serves me correct.
Now would be a good time to get him before you wait and have to pay through the nose.

Long term prognosis? Great. Short-term prognosis? He's still developing a bit and behind a few other guys on the blue line, so hold if you get him and be patient. Defensemen take a while...

The Caps have 8 D currently and only Orlov is not subject to waivers. The coaches are very happy with his play though, so I see them keeping Orlov unless they are forced to send him down because they're not able to make a trade.
If Orlov does go back to Hershey, it will be only temporary until a spot gets cleared for him.

Orlov has all the tools to become a star defenseman in this league, and my sense is the Caps organization are grooming him and Carlson to replace Green and Wideman. Wideman is definitely a short-term plug in that organization in my opinion.
This year his value is probably marginal, but I can see him having a meaningful impact as soon as next year. In a keeper I'd be all over the chance to get him.

I think Wideman will be moved shortly. The team is in desperate need of secondary scoring. Weather or not this is before Orlov get's sent down I don't know. I'm pretty sure (not100%) he is the only one of there guys who is not subject to waivers as someone noted above so he would most likely be the first to be sent down if thy don't want to carry 8 D, but in a keeper he is as blaze alluded to one of the best young offensive defenseman prospects out there and he is by no means a one trick pony. He likes to throw the body around and can play in his own zone as well.
