I'm holding Schneider, but Varley and Harding are FA's. Varley will get me starts, but he's streaky. Harding has been solid, but hurt. Schneider was playing great, but got shelled the other night. And Loungo seems to be getting 80% of the starts now. Should I just hold him?

Is this a keeper? If so, hold onto Schneider for sure - his value will skyrocket if/when he gets traded.
Even if this is a one year, you already have two starters (well one and a half with Halak), Schneider will get more starts than Harding and post better ratios than Varley so I'd still hang onto him.

One year league. But I don't know... whoever MIN puts in goal these days plays great. Their D must be doing something right. It's tempting to drop Schneider for Harding! But Lou has been on and off, and hurt some. Maybe Schneids is the best play.

First of all, I am almost certain Schneids will get more starts than Harding for the rest of the season.
Secondly, for your third string goalie position on your roster, it is important to balance quantity of starts vs. quality... you don't want to put a guy like Montoya or Varly in who may potentially blow up your ratios (svp / gaa) at the expense of a few more wins. Schneider is the best goalie in the league for this type of roster role in my opinion... he has a good chance of getting the W whenever he starts without putting your GAA/SV% at risk.

Thanks Blayze. You always have great advice! Hard to argue with your point!

Well I guess I"ll play devils advocate because I would actually take Harding
1) Before Harding got injured he was almost in a 50/50 split with Backstrom, the only reason why Schneider even got so many starts up until this point is because of Luongo's injury, which allowed Schneider to gain a lot of momentum and it carried past the point that even AV counted on. 2) With Halak as your #2, the number of starts that my #3 gets is very important to me (and I would know, Halak is my #2 in my one-year too). Elliott is getting a pretty large portion of the starts in St.Louis, almost as much of a split Backstrom/Harding was if not more. Really, if you think about it, Harding + Halak = the workload of a #1 goalie to me. So I guess the main point where mine and blayze's thoughts diverge is regarding who will get more starts. Schneider has already gotten a much larger portion of starts than what AV had intended for him originally because of Luongo's injury IMO. |

Good points... here is why I would take Schneider > Harding, and for me it's not close.
-The "50/50" split you speak of was only for a short period when Harding was playing at an UNREAL level... the dude was posting .960+ save percentage and won 4 straight... Harding's good no doubt, but that wasn't the "real" Harding -We already know AV tabbed Schneider for ~35 starts this season... I don't think the games he picked up as a result of Lu's injury changes that pace going forward, but that's just my opinion -Contrast that to Harding, who historically has only played about ~20'ish games per season... and he's been in MIN for a pretty long time so I doubt that changes suddenly, no reason to, and the coach hasn't communicated anything that would indicate a 50/50 Finally, I believe one of the two goalies in VAN has to go... there's too much talent there and Schneider needs to shine. If VAN is in fact positioning him for a trade, they will want to showcase him as someone who can be a legit #1 to maximize trade value and the way to do that is giving him starts.

We need a tiebreaker in threads like this haha.
Harding has always been regarded as being a very talented goalie, its the injury issues that has really derailed his career. He managed to play well at all levels, from junior to the AHL and finally to the NHL when he was given a chance. He's had so many injuries over the past few years though that he never really got a REAL chance. Backstrom is also a pretty risky guy with regards to injury history as well. I dunno, I guess this is one of those 'agree to disagree' moments and see how it plays out. |

I'm glad you chimed in and played devil's advocate... I personally think we could use a LOT more of that on this forum rather then the many "yes men" who blindly agree with the first person who has a high post count to weigh-in.
I'm just perplexed at your position on this one since you're usually on point with these things. I don't think it's even close lol. Backstrom is back and he's playing like a stud, while Harding's last two starts (a long time ago) have been disastrous. He also hasn't played in over 10 days now. Pretty sure if Backstrom stays healthy (big if, I know) then Harding goes back to his 20 start pace. Even if we pretended they get the same amount of starts, Schneider plays for a better team, will win more games and will post better ratios. All this on top of potentially being showcased for a trade. Maybe I'm just not seeing something
