This is the early morning edition of S&D.
STUDS Ray Whitney Whitney has quietly had a very impressive start to this season. Last night he led the way with a goal and two assists while finishing plus-3 with four shots in a 4-1 win over the Blackhawks. Overall he has 21 points in 23 games. Not bad for a guy pushing 40. Kiprusoff shutout Shutouts are so important in fantasy hockey so when they happen they must be noted. Miikka Kiprusoff has also quietly had a great start to the season with a 10-9 record and a .920 save percentage. Last night he made 26 saves in the 1-0 win over Nashville. Sausage fest Cory Schneider was bombarded with shots in last night's game versus Columbus. He stopped 47 of 48 in an impressive 4-1 outing. This continues his impressive run of late and pushes Roberto Luongo a bit farther down the bench. Honourable mention Chris Phillips finished with two assists and a plus-4 rating. DUDS New coach, same dull outcome For all three of you who don't know yet, Bruce Boudreau was fired and Dale Hunter is his replacement. For many this marked the end of the slumping Capitals and the beginning of a resurgence. Well the bounce back will have to wait one more game as the team only generated one goal on 19 shots. It is worth noting that Nicklas Backstrom scored assisted by Alex Ovechkin. Crawford chased from crease Crawford allowed four goals on 21 shots in a 4-1 defeat against the Phoenix Coyotes. He was replaced by backup Ray Emery for the final 15 minutes. Not cleared for take-off In a 6-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators, Jets' captain Andrew Ladd was blanked from the score sheet and finished a terrible minus-4. Dis-honourable mention The Carolina Hurricanes were also playing their first game in front of a new coach. They did not fare better than the Capitals as the team lost 3-1 to the Panthers. Tomas Kaberle finished minus-2 with no points to continue his season of misery. Also:

I'd actually put muller in the honorable mention section. While Carolina lost he got e.staal to pickup an assist. I'm sorry but warrants a good mention!!!!!!!

Feels like desperation is pulling down our standards a tiny bit here

Also of note, Byfuglien and Kane went nutty in the shooting department.
Kane had 2 goals in under a minute with 7 SOG while Buffy picked up an assist and 12 SOG. |

Dud to Kirk Muller for having Tomas Kaberle out on the ice with under 5 minutes left in the game.
All those in favour? Kaberle really blows. Also I said this yesterday before he scored his two goals but Evander Kane has been so much better than the numbers show which are already pretty damn good. Next thing you know he pots two goals in under a minute. Beauty. |

The S&D is kind of like the hall of fame voting process. We have to do 3/3 plus honorable mention(s) every time. On busy nights it's nearly impossible to include all the great stats. On other nights I have to list the team mascot as a stud just to meet the quota.
I also wanted to include Shawn Matthias and Al Montoya but ran out of space.

Although I do like explaining why the mascot is one of the night's top studs...
