Whats thoughts on him at this point? Why isn't he with the big club and do we see a return for him this season?

As a former owner (picked him up early last season when he had a really good start and was getting the Rafalski comparisons), I've been keeping an eye on him. Hasn't exactly been lighting it up in the AHL with 8 points in 18 games considering he got 50 in 75 a couple of years ago. Not really sure if he'll get called up but my suspicion is yes, at some point this season the Devils will call him up, either because of injuries, desperation or possibly if he improves his offensive output a bit. But at the same time, I can't help think that this may be one of those timing situations which Dobber talks about some times. i.e. he was just establishing himself last year when he got injured - terrible timing and could be what prevents him from being an NHLer.

I'm not sold on him. Good AHL point-producer and has the stats to back that up, but he's pretty far behind in the NJD depth-charts I think for Dmen....
Merrill and Urbom are probably going to get a shot sooner than Taor I would think... With Larsson there too, and Volchenkov signed for a while, I can't see Taor sticking with the big club. That's just me though, I could be very wrong!

Called up per rotoworld: "Matt Taormina has been summoned by the New Jersey Devils.Taormina has four goals and 12 points in 23 games with the AHL Albany Devils this season. He could make his season debut against the Canadiens on Saturday."
Tempted to take a punt and pick him up on waivers - you never know...

Played 20:51 in his 6th game tonight, and picked up an assist and +1. Not too shabby.

I thought it worthwhile to renew this thread as the Tallinder injury (6-8 weeks), this may be the best opportunity Taormina gets to show what he's got. It was nice to see him get 21:45 of ice time in Saturday's game against Philly, and he managed an assist and +1 (which is impressive in a 4-1 loss). He was actually one of only two Devils who had a positive +/- (the other being Larsson).
Big 4-6 weeks ahead for Taormina! I wish him the best of luck.

I have been watching him very closely as well. I like the way he skates and i took him last year near the end of my draft since he was the QB with Kovy at the end of the year. I'm not very happy that foster has taken over the job but i think he can take it. Foster is horrendous defensively with his -3 from last game being a very good indicator.
Fingers are crossed he takes over as the PPQB. Biiiiiiiiig February!! |

It's been a fairly disappointing stretch for Taormina with some scratches and not getting PP time. Didn't register a point in the 6 goals NJ scored yesterday. Foster seems to have a foothold now thanks to his 2 goals and 1 assist yesterday too. Even though I've been very patient with Taormina, I'm thinking of calling it a day - maybe by next Friday's waivers.

Wait for Adam Larsson's injury news before that.

Taormina is 25 and running out of time to crack the lineup. He has had ample opportunity this season but has not been able to grabb the spot on a permanent basis.
I took the opportunity recently to move him in a deal in my full keeper league. Taromina is small and a bit weak in his own end so unless his offense picks up he won't fit in. I think the window has closed for Taromina. NJD have Volchenkov, Tallinder, Larsson, and Andy Greene under contract for next year and Mark Fayne who is a RFA this year will likely get resigned. Then they have Foster and Salvador as UFA's. The big threat for Taromina is Jon Merrill who will likely be on the scene with NJ next year. I think the role for Taromina going forward will be an AHL player with the occassional injury call up. Even this year when Larsson comes back Taromina likely goes back to the AHL this year. |
