Default 11/25/11 - Studs & Duds

TK is out with a mysterious upper-body injury and as a result I'm a late addition to the roster for tonight.

STUDS

Some very "sharp" performances in Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks erased a 4-2 deficit after two periods to win 6-5 versus the Anaheim Ducks. Patrick Sharp finished the night with a hat trick on six shots. Jonathan Toews had two goals and added three assists. All four Hawks' goals in the third were scored by these two players.

Backups rise to the occasion

Tonight there were three shutouts and all of them were obtained by backup goaltenders. Johan Hedberg (23 saves vs Islanders), Brian Elliott (24 saves vs Flames) and Cory Schneider (22 saves vs Coyotes) came up with big performances for their respective fantasy owners.

Crosby takes over again

It's been beaten to death, but it's great to see Sid back on the ice. Tonight he had three assists in a 6-3 victory over the Senators. But even more importantly was his success at the faceoff circle, winning 18 of 25 draws (72%).

Honourable mention

Jimmy Howard made 41 saves on 43 shots to secure a 3-2 shootout win over the Bruins. Howard has now won four straight games, while Boston had a 10-game winning streak snapped.

DUDS

Ducks collapse in third period

As mentioned earlier, the Ducks held a 4-2 lead going into the third period. Then they allowed three goals in the first 3:33 of the final frame. Jonas Hiller was then chased from the crease. Dan Ellis took over and the Ducks never recovered. For the Ducks this was their sixth straight defeat. They only have one win in the month of November.

Not so Wild

Even though Devin Setoguchi and Mikko Koivu combined for a power-play goal in this game, the top line for the Wild was not very good tonight. Setoguchi, Koivu and Dany Heatley were each minus-3. That is not a good number especially considering the team lost by three goals (5-2 vs Edmonton).

Premature finish

Insert your own joke here. Jhonas Enrorh and Craig Anderson were both chased from the crease after poor starts to their respective game. Enroth allowed four goals on 18 shots while Anderson was far worse allowing four goals on just eight shots.

Dis-honourable mention

This is more of a personal thing to me, but when I see the Hawks score six times you would think Marian Hossa would be all over that score board. WRONG! Even though he had seven shots on goal, he finished the night minus-1 with no points. One would expect more from him in such a high-scoring game.

Nice write-up.

I was also quite sad to see Kane assist on only one of the goals. Especially with Sharp and Toews scoring 3 and 2 respectively...

Very creative and well written work, Eric. Yeah, seeing that many points and Hossa not having one is baffling.
