Sundays are typically quiet nights in the NHL but try telling that to the city of Winnipeg. I live 400 km away and could hear their roar when the game started. Welcome back Winnipeg, the NHL wasn't the same without you. Now on to the Studs and Duds!
Studs 3) What a Tangled Web We Weave Yannick Weber has been on Dobber's top prospects list for like forever. It's nice to finally see something from him now that Markov is injured (AGAIN). Weber had a fantastic game for the Habs and his fantasy owners (however few of you there are left) finishing with a line of: 1 G - 1 A - Plus-2 - 1 PPP - 2 PIM - 3 SOG. With his booming shot Weber will certainly receive PP minutes and can even sub in for Subban because of his right-handed shot. 2) Plek Me a Winner Tomas Plekanec may be the most hated man in Winnipeg, which is shocking since both Garry Bettman and Prime Minister Stephen Harper were in attendance. He almost single-handedly spoiled the Jets home opener notched one goal (the game winner) and two assists to go along with a plus-3 rating. 1) Dubbie Dubbie Do! You know what, pretty much every goalie outside of one posted a great outing for his team today but I'm an Oiler fan so excuse me for being biased when I say Devan Dubnyk was the most impressive. Despite letting in a weak goal early to Kris Letang, Dubnyk kept his composure stopping everything else that came his way. In all Dubnyk stopped 34 of 35 shots through regulation and overtime and then holding on for the shootout win. Duds 3) Habitually Injured As if the injury bug wasn't hitting them hard enough the Habs saw both Jaroslav Spacek and Mike Cammalleri go down and not return. To make matters worse, Scott Gomez is still healthy. It certainly seems to be raining shit on the Habs this season. 2) Wheeler? Wheeler? Wheeler... How does the old saying go? "He has all the tools but is missing the toolbox." God I hate seeing this guy continue to get chances. Despite seeing over 18 minutes of ice time (five of which were on the power play) he managed just two SOG and came in with a minus-2 rating. While he was by no means the worst Jet statistically, he was damn close and consider he is (somehow) still fantasy relevant he definitely gets Dud Status. 1) He Can Pavelec My Balls While I personally wouldn't blame Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec for today's stinking performance I'd understand if his owners were less forgiving. His line of five goals on 22 shots left you with a .773 Save% and a GAA of five. Pavelec is going to have to be better than that for the Jets (and his owners) to win this season. Look Out For Ryan Nugent-Hopkins This summer's first overall selection and Oilers rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded his first NHL goal to tie the game for the Oilers late in the third period. Regardless of the goal RNH played a fantastic game and if he keeps this up he will absolutely remain with the big club. As I have speculated for some time now this means there is no longer room for Sam Gagner on the team. Where (and when) do the Oilers move him? Magnus Paajarvi The Oilers are doing their best to find ice time for their youngsters, so much so that they are giving Paajarvi minutes on the power play manning the point. It is likely because of the glut of injuries they have on the blueline but it's worth watching this situation. Jet Wings As I tweeted when the news broke, Winnipeg is not a great fit for Brett MacLean. They are so set for wingers that not even Evander Kane can get good minutes. Both MacLean and Kane saw limited action on Sunday with 13:42 and 10:34 minutes respectively. Of course if they just gave up on the Wheeler experiment then maybe someone who is actually good could get a chance. Breaking-Up the Band Winnipeg broke up the tandem of Byfuglien and Enstrom on Sunday. Last season the pair played together 60% of the time at even strength but on Sunday they played only 20% of the time together. They were still the featured pairing on the power play but now at even strength Byfuglien's primary linemate is Johnny Oduya. So rather than Enstrom suffering for Byfuglien's gambits it will be Oduya who went a team-low minus-3 on Sunday. To elaborate further, Byfuglien played only 21 minutes on Sunday, while Enstrom played over 25. At even strength Enstrom's predominant partner was Ron Hainsey. Enstrom is easily the Jets best player/defenseman so this could negatively impact Byfuglien while helping Hainsey (who still has some offensive potential). One-Timers Could the league possibly make an exception and allow the Jets to wear home whites this season? Every Oilers game should end in a shootout, no? Friday Night Lights fans, Edmonton's Ryan Jones is clearly a Tim Riggins doppleganger. Over/Under on Carey Price starts this year? I'm saying 75.

With all due respect, they technically still suck. And yes, I have been a fan of the oilers my whole life. If they make it to the playoff push, I will give my assessment a slight adjustment. Until then, they have as much reason to defend their worth and potential as Kyle Turris.

The Oil are exciting in that they have a bunch of talented young players on the team. However, they will still suck this year, I don't think there's much doubt about that. Someone tweeted yesterday something about how Edm paired Cam Barker with Tom Gilbert and how you might as well just give the opposing team a goal.
Whereas their PP might be OK this year, but they will yet again rank near the bottom in terms of goals against...even a solid goalie can't do much with clowns as Dmen

I think I am just jealous because the flames (seem to) suck as well but we have no light at the end of the tunnel.
