Geez, tough choices. I\'d go with Sakic, with the way he plays the game, he could probably play for a few more years.

If the pool requires a minimum number of defencemen, then I would lean towards Lidstrom. Lidstrom could just as easily play his last few years in the SEL as threatened more than once before.

Lidstrom. Scoring D are hard to find in a pool, and he had great plus minus.

I disagree. This year Lidstrom outscored Modano, tied Shanahan in points, and was only six behind Recchi. If the league counts +/-, then the +40 he brought to the table would have made him more valuable than any of those three. Add to that Selanne\'s (and Shanahan\'s) very possible retirements, and he could be either second or third on the list in value.

Assuming Selanne and Shanny return, I\'d prefer to have:

Sakic
Selanne
Lidstrom
Recchi (only because of Crosby)
Shanahan
Modano

RE: the question of longevity, I expect Sakic and Lidstrom to be the last men standing. Super Joe may want another Cup, and Dater sure makes it sound like he has enjoyed being the elder statesman in Colorado (though I\'m sure he wouldn\'t object to a bit more veteran help). Meanwhile, Lidstrom can play his style of game for as long as he wants.

True, TG, but Lidstrom has made no secret that he\'d like to play a couple of years in Sweden before it\'s all said and done...

That\'s a good point which I had forgotten about, but I still think he has another three seasons in the NHL (about the same as Chris Chelios :lol.

Sakic might also have three more in him, but I doubt that anyone else on the list does. Perhaps Modano, but he\'s far from a fantasy blue-chipper already.
