Who is running the Minnesota power play this season? Obvious answer is Marek Zidlicky, but at 34 his body doesn't recover as fast as it did, and his re-occurring hamstring injuries last year might be something to look at more closely.

And for the sake of this short "article", let's play pretend, and pretend Zidlicky gets hurt. Who else is there in Minnesota?

Insert Jared Spurgeon. He debuted last year as a pro, and played in the NHL as well. I think Spurgeon will already get some quality powerplay time even if Zidlicky doesn't get injured. His primarily goal this summer was to add muscle. He is a smallish (hopefully he added some weight this summer) defender but can play in all three zones. He really sees the ice well, and can move the puck extremely well on the power play, where he flourishes. I think 30+ isn't out of the question.

Scandella might be next in line after Spurgeon. There's nobody else that can move the puck unless they sign someone else.

It's funny I had another paragraph about Scandella....but unless Zidlicky and Spurgeon go down, I can't see Scandella getting a chance at the top unit....Spurgeon would have to struggle...

Cullen will run the point with Zidlicky on the top unit. Spurgeon will be on 2PP. But you're right that Spurgeon will get his opportunity WHEN, not if, Zidlicky gets injured.
