Default Zoo animals reactions to Aug 23rd quake !!

This article list the reactions of some of the animals at the Smithsonian National zoo in Washington to the Aug 23rd earthquake.

http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Publicatio...earthquake.cfm

Great Apes
The earthquake hit the Great Ape House and Think Tank Exhibit during afternoon feeding time.
About five to ten seconds before the quake, many of the apes, including Kyle (an orangutan) and Kojo (a Western lowland gorilla), abandoned their food and climbed to the top of the tree-like structure in the exhibit.
About three seconds before the quake, Mandara (a gorilla) let out a shriek and collected her baby, Kibibi, and moved to the top of the tree structure as well.
Iris (an orangutan) began €œbelch vocalizing€€”an unhappy/upset noise normally reserved for extreme irritation€”before the quake and continued this vocalization following the quake.
Small Mammals
The red ruffed lemurs sounded an alarm call about 15 minutes before the quake and then again just after it occurred.
The howler monkeys sounded an alarm call just after the earthquake.
The black-and-rufous giant elephant shrew hid in his habitat and refused to come out for afternoon feeding.

All I know is the red ruffed lemurs shold be household pets for everyone in quake zones !!!

Scientists should study this more to learn why animals always seem to know these things before we do. It isn't just limited to earthquakes either. They have a very queer 6th sense about things.

This is assuming that quakes are all they sound alarms for.... I do not want to go running out into the night in my underwear (time permitting) just because my neighbour slammed his car door and spooked the Lemur.

Animals definitely are better at these things than us... I seem to recall that relatively few animals got caught by the 2004 Tsunami.

hahaha yes that would be good ... maybe they have different sounding alarm calls for quakes or slamming doors!!

And yes I remember that to that many animals all started moving to higher ground prior to the tsunami!!

It's funny how animals can somehwo sense these things, and to see how they react.

Sometimes even after the quake they often exhibit changes in their behavior patterns for days. Fascinating stuff.

My wife and I observed with amazement as some six hours after the quake, Stan (a jackass) for a few moments, abandoned his usual "how much money I make" bleating, and began belch vocalizing an unhappy/upset noise about being married to her sister.

Also his wallet remained hidden in it's habitat and refused to come out to pay for his feeding. So I can only assume that he was somehow able to "sense" that the danger had passed, and was beginning to resume his normal behavior patterns.

I'm thinking her sister would be much better off getting one of those red rutted lemurs.
