Who would you rather have for a points only keeper league? And what do you see from them this year, and upside? (no positional requirements for forwards)
Thanks for any input.

Dalpe, hands down. Much more complete player.

For me this one is too close to call, they seem to be in a dead heat. Similar AHL numbers, both had significant cups of coffee with the Canes last season, both highly touted players. But based on the responses so far you should probably go with Dalpe because it seems he will have better trade value. I personally see no basis to conclude that it is Dalpe "hands down" or "for sure", but acquiring players is just as much about their trade value as it is about how they will produce.

Get some more information than just the stats and you'll see that it's not even close. Boychuk has fallen out of favor for not developing as expected and is right now 13th/14th on the depth chart while Dalpe is pretty much a no-brainer for the top six, and that's according to Jim Rutherford, not some random scrubs like us. Dalpe is pencilled in to play with Skinner and Ruutu by Rutherford. He is just a player that's better suited for NHL play while Boychuk, after years of chances, haven't been able to translate his play to the big league.

Dalpe
Boychuk That's how much I would rank Dalpe ahead of Boychuk. They have similar upsides, and Dalpe will be there sooner, and is more guaranteed to reach it.

Dalpe lit up the AHL as a rookie to the tune of 57pt in 61GP. Boychuk put up 36pt in 52GP in his rookie season.
Dalpe is a very complete player who WILL play in the NHL next season. He looks to have a long NHL career. Boychuk still has a ton of potential but his style of play is better suited to the AHL and Europe rather than the tighter checking NHL. I traded Boychuk at the deadline this past year because I knew I could acquire Dalpe instead. So needless to say, Dalpe over Boychuk - not that Boychuk is a bad option either.

Sentium, you are assuming that I don't read up on Canes news and you are wrong about that. Of course I have read about Rutherford's comments about the lineup this season and how he sees things playing out. I have a number of Canes in my league (not Dalpe or Boychuk though). To me those are obviously positive signs for Dalpe but I have followed hockey long enough to know that there are many many instances of GMs making comments/promises like this that don't end up playing out in the end. Don't forget that Boychuk played more NHL games last season than Dalpe did and outscored Dalpe in both the AHL and NHL. I would take Dalpe if given the opportunity to choose between the two, but as I said above, that is more because it is becoming apparent that his value is a lot higher in keeper leagues, not because I believe he will be the better producer long-term in the NHL. |

IMO Dalpe is FAR from a lock in the top-6 unless he's improved in the faceoff circle. The Canes' biggest problem last year was an inability to win faceoffs - that's why Ruutu was moved to C. They've picked up Brent to help, but I can't see him taking any offensive zone faceoffs. The opportunity is there for Dalpe, and that's I think why Rutherford made the comments - as motivation. If he doesn't show he can carry the load as a 2nd line C, Ruutu will likely be moved back to C and in that scenario I think Boychuk takes his spot in the top-6.
